My invention relates to a screen designed to be suspended in front Of an Ordinary replace or grate and having for its Object the lprevention of hot coals, &c., being thrown vout upon the floor.
My device consists Of a series. of metal chains' suspended at oney end from a transverse support, which is fastened at its extremities across the Opening in the mantelpiece Or grate-frame.`
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation Of a lire-place With my screen in Fig. 2 is a sectionalview on the line X X of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detailed view showing the mode of securing the transverse crosschain in place.
A is the screen, which consists of a series of metal chains B, Vsuspended at` their upper ends in the grate-frame or fire-place Opening D, Figs. l and 2. The chains B are suspended from a rod Or cross-bar C. In Fig. 3

This screen eifectually prevents hot coals, &c., escaping from the front of the grate, is very cheaply and easily made, and presents an Ornamental appearance. The form of chain may be varied at will.
In another application filed by me simultaneously herewith, Serial No. 299,872, I have fully described and claimed a'ire-screen .consisting 0f a series of non-flexible metal rods suspended from a bar extending across the dre-place. The subject-matter of my said application I do not herein claim.
l. As a new article of manufacture, a firescreen consisting of `a transverse support and a series of metallic chains secured thereto each at one end and suspended therefrom. f 2. As a new4 article Of manufacture, a firescreen consisting of a metallic cross-chain andaseries of metallic chains secured thereto, each at one end, and suspended therefrom.
3. In combination with a grate Or mantelframe having the usual fire-place Opening, a metallic cross-chain secured at its extremities transversely the upper part of said frame, and a series Of metallic chains attached to said cross-chain, each at One end and suspended therefrom.
