ELLA \VALLING, OF XVASIIINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
FIRE-PLACE OR STOVE FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 344,294, dated June 22,1886.
Application filed February 24, 1886. Serial No, 193,039.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA WALLING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vashingtou cit-y, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Place or Stove Fenders and Attachments, of which the following is a description.
My invention consists of a fender provided with supporting-rollers, and having a hinge at one end and a fastening device at the other end, whereby it is adapted to be hinged in front of a fire-place, grate, latrobe, or other stove, and so made capable of being moved into and out of position without lifting, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 isaperspcctive view of a fire-place with my improved fender attached in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a fire-place with the fender removed from the front of the fire-place and swung back on the hinge to the right side and in position to be returned without stooping and lifting to the front of the fireplace. Fig. 3 is a detailed view of the latch or fastening for keeping the fendersecure in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detailed view ofaform ofjoint or hinge by which the fender is permanently attached to the right side to thefireplace or mantel orframe surrounding the tireplace. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a lat-robe with thefenderattached in its normal position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a stove or latrobe with the fender unfastened or unclasped at theleft side and in position to be rolled farther back or replaced in its normal position.
The fire-place mantel or casing is marked A. The fender complete is marked B. These may be of any ordinary or other size, and of different materials, forms, or configurations.
At one side of the frame A, near its base, is one member of a hinge or fastening, (marked 0,) firmly secured, consisting of an L-shaped rod, its outer end projecting upward. The other member ofthe hinge 0 consists of an eyebolt, D, secured to the oneon the right end of the fender B, so that its eye or loop will encircle the upward-extending rod O when the fender is in its normal position before the fire place.
There is no limitation as respects the form (X0 model.)
or size of the hinge-joint or fastening for uniting the frame A and fender B.
The form described is only preferred, and because it allows the disuniting of these parts, which may be a matter of advantage or convenience in transportation and otherwise, and also because it enables the eyebolt D to be formed or cast in one piece with the frame or fender, or to be secured by any common or sufficient means.
Thehinge-connection or other fastening prevents the fender from being moved laterally as respects the fire place or casing; and to prevent the unhinged end from being moved from the frame (except when desired) a springcatch, E, as in Fig. 2, is provided, which engages or connects with apcrtureF in the frame. This form of fastening or catch is not exclusive, and may be varied to other clasps or hooks. It only is preferred.
A push-button, a, is secured to or connected with the springcatch E, and projects upward through the fender, to afford a convenient method for unfastening the end of the catch from the aperture F of the frame.
The fender will be mounted on smooth rollers, preferably with rubber surfaces, so that the carpet, rugs, or floor in front of the fireplace will remain uninjured. These rollers are represented by the leiterH.
Rising from the fender is a standard, G, provided near the top with crescent arms, to hold the poker-s, tongs, shovels, &e., used in conneciion with open fires or stoves.
It is preferred to place a bulb or knob at the upper end or rod of thehinge-pintle G, to give a finish to the structure, and to prevent the loop of eycbolt D from being accidentally disengaged from the pintle.
The fastenings or attachments of the fender, when used in connection with a latrobe or stove, are substantially like those used in connection with open fireplaces, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 5 and 6, and may be attached to the stoves or their easing or framework.
I am aware that fenders for fireplaces have heretofore been provided with rollers, and in some instances with hinged doors having suitable fastcnings; also, that stoves have been provided with hearths hinged at one end, and so arranged as to form part of the door for closing the ash space beneath the grate. These devices, however, I do not claim.
My invention, as herein described, possesses provided with supporting-rollers, and having a hinge at one end and a detachable fastening at the other end, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a fire-place, grate, or stove and its frame or casing, of a fender supported on rollers, and having a hinge at one 'end and a detachable fastening at the other end, whereby it is capable of being moved in and out in front of the fire without being lifted from the floor or hearth, substantially as described.
ELLA WALLI'NG.
