UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM SIMON HARRIS, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
G RATE-BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 394,359, dated December 11, 1888.
Application filed April 19, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM SlMON HAR- RIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grate-Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in grate-blowers; and it has for its object to provide a simple and cheap folding blower which when folded back will present no soiled or blackened surface which is liable to be touched by a person attending to-the fire.
\Vith this object in view the invention consists in arranging the folding leaves of the blower in such a manner that their inner and blacken ed sides will fold together, thereby presenting only clean surfaces.
Theinvention consists, further, in a certain novel construction and arrangement of parts fully set forth hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the blower applied in the operative position to a fireplace. Fig. 2 is similar view with the blower open or folded back. Fig. 3 is a detail per spective view of one of the brackets which form the bearings for the sections of the blower. Fig. t is a vertical sectional view taken through the grate-basket and one of the folding doors to show the manner of attaching the bracket to the basket. Fi 5 is a plan view of the bracket and a portion of the grate-basket, showing the adjacent jamb of the fire-place in section. Fig. [S is a detail view of one of the doors.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A des ignates the grate or grate-basket, to the top bar of which the brackets B B are attached. The brackets are provided with the depending lugs C C, to straddle the bar of the gratebasket, and an aperture, 1), is formed in the plate of the liiracket close to one of the lugs to receive a wedge, E. This wedge is passed down close to one lug, and in forcing the grate-bar away from this lug binds it firmly against the opposite lug, thereby securely clamping the bracket in place. The brackets are provided at their outer ends with notches F and at intermediate points with bearings G. The brackets are arranged on the top grate-bar, respectively, near its ends, and the Serial No. 271,140. (No model.)
notches F are engaged with the rear exposed edges of the grate front or facing F, which is turned in on opposite sides of the fire-place opening to form a finish. 'lhenotch F maybe of any desired shape to suit the shape of the edge of the facing or front.
The folding leaves II II of the blower are arranged, respectively, on opposite sides of the grate, and they consist of the outer sections, it, which are hinged to the sides of the fire-place, and the inner sections, 72, which are hinged to the said outer sections. The outer edges of the outer sections are provided with the depending spindles K K, which are mounted in the bearings G in the brackets to thus hinge the sections to the sides of the fire-place.
The single depending spindles K will be found quite sufficient under ordinary circumstances to support the folding leaves; but additional vertical spindles, K, (shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings,) may be arranged on the outer sections to engage suitable sockets (not shown) at the top of the fire-place open ing.
When the leaves are folded back, the outer sections fold against the wall and the inner sections fold over the outer sections, and it will be observed that the soiled sides of the sections (or the sides which are toward the fire) are in contact with each other when the sections are folded, thereby avoiding the risk of soiling the wall or furniture or the clothing of persons passing the fire. The inner sections are provided with handles 01' catches L to enable the leaves to be manipulated.
One advantage of the improved blower is that it may be withdrawn from the front of the fire by simply swinging the leaves outward; furthermore, the blower does not come in contact with the floor and the smoked side is not exposed when the device is removed from the fire; furthermore, the inner sections may be arranged slightly open to allow more or less draft to the fire; furthermore, the blower may be detached from the bearings at any time by simply raising it; and, furthermore, the blower may be attached to any fireplace by simply arranging the brackets on the top bar of the grate-basket, as described.
I am aware of the patents granted to Rankin,No. 167,020, and to \VilliamsomNo. 1 69,876;
adapted to bear against the grate-bar, in (30111- hination with swinging leaves provided with depending spindles K, mounted in the bearings G, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the :tforegoing as my own I have hereto ailixed In signature in. presence of two witnesses.
XVILLIABI SIMON HARRIS.
