SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 715,370, dated December 9, 1902.

Application filed August 6, 1902.

To all whom, it may concern:

7 Be it known that I, HENRY HAGEDORN, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Bed-Lounges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this speciiication.

This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in bed-lounges.

The aim of my invention is to provide a lounge so constructed that the same may be extended to form a bed, as will be described more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawingsI have shown in Figure 1 a side view of a bed-lounge embodying my invention. Fig. 2 shows a top view with portions removed. Fig. 3 shows a detail of the ratchet as used in my invention. Fig. 4. discloses the handle used in operating the ratchet. Fig. '5 shows a detached view of one of the hinges as used in my invention,

while Fig. 6 shows an end View of the roller used in my bed-lounge.

26 and 26 are the end panels 25 25, which in turn are secured to the arm-posts 20, as disclosed in Fig. 1, which posts support the arms 21, secured-to the head-posts 26 26, as disclosed in the drawings. To further secure each set of head and arm posts; I employ the intermediate transverse braces 2et, while the upper portion of each arm-post 20 is provided with a bracket 23, secured to the transverse member 2a, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.

Extending from one arm-post 20 to the other is a front panel 2;, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) while extending from one rear head- .the strip by means of suitable nails. In Fig.

post 26 to the opposite head-post 26' is a rearpanel 10, as shown in the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The panels 25, a, and w are connected by means of the bottom a, as disclosed in Fig. 1, to form a suitable receptacle within which the bedding may be held. This receptacle is divided into two compartments by means of the transverse members v, (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) closed by the lids K and K, secured by means of a suitable catch f, as shown.

Secured to each arm-post 20 is a hinge comprising the members 19 and18, as is shown in Fig. 5, while further securing these armposts 20 is a transverse slot-provided bar 28, to which is secured the canvas bottom B, as is shown in Fig. 1. This bottom is secured in forcing one end of the canvas bottom B into the slot 22 of the bar 28, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and then forcing an ordinary strip of wood 0 upon the canvas B and forcing the same into the slot 22 and securing 1 the strip 0' is shown in dotted lines.

Secured to the hinge members 18 are the side panels D and D, a top view of these side panels being shown in Fig. 2. The panel D is provided with a seating 11, (shown in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 2,) into which is adapted to work the tongue 14. of the side member 0. Adjacent the seating 11, within the side panel D, is secured a bolt 16, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, operated by means of a suitable spring 17, and from which bolt extends a thumb-piece e, as is disclosed in Fig. 2, so that these members 0 and D may be locked in alinement when the lounge is opened. From the opposite arm-post 20, also provided with a suitable hinge, extends the side panel D, provided with the projecting tongue 14,.adapted to fit into the seating 15 and within the panel C, and this tongue 14 is also adapted to be secured by a spring-bolt 16, provided with a thumb-piece e, by which the same is operated. The panels Dand C are secured by means of a hinge 13, and the panels D and O by means of a hinge 13.

Extending from the panels 0 and C are the hinges 12, which are secured to the stub side members a and a, secured to the traveling foot-posts 2 2, and these posts in turn are so cured by the transverse front panel 5, which is embellished by means of a suitable cushion 6, as shown in Fig. 1. These traveling footposts 2 are provided with the casters 3, and above, secured to the transverse panel 5 by means of the hinges 1, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, is the seat-cushion frame 4, provided with the seat-cushion A, as shown. Extending transversely from these stub side members or panels a and a is a roller F, provided at one end with a pintle b, as is shown in Fig. 2, working within a socket of the stub side member a, while at the opposite end this roller F is provided with the projecting stubsha ft b, passing entirely through the stub side member a, as disclosed in Fig. 2. To this stub-shaft b is secured the ratchet-wheel c, and further secured to the side panel a is the pawl e, engaging the ratchet 0, so that this roller may be adjustably held. This roller F is provided with a slotf, as shown in Fig. 2, into which is adapted to work a bar g, as disclosed in Fig. 6, and into this socket or slotf is forced one end of the canvas bed-bottom B When this bar 9 is inserted and properly secured.

Fastened to the seat-cushion frame 4 upon one side is an ear '7, provided with a pin 8, from which extend the toggle-bars 10, united by the pin 9 and secured to the stub side member or panel 01,, so that this seat-cushion may be held in an upright position, as disclosed in Fig. 1, when the bed-lounge is distended and opened to be used as a bed.

It will thus be seen that my invention embodies a rectangular receptacle supported by means of two arm-posts and two head-posts,the latter supporting a suitable cushioned back. Folding against this receptacle are the two side panels D and D, to which panels are hinged the side panels 0 C, said panels D and 0 being provided with latches, so that these panels may be latched and locked in alinement. These panels 0 and O in turn are secured to the stub panels or members a and a, which are fastened to the traveling posts 2, strengthened by the transverse brace-bar 5, supporting the hinged seat-cushion A, while extending from the main receptacle is the bed-bottom B, mounted upon a ratchet-secured roller F, revolubly secured to the traveling end of the lounge. Now when such a bed-lounge is to be used as a bed the operator grasps the transverse bar 5 from below and draws the same forward in such a manner that the members D D and C and G will unfold, so that these side members may be latched into alinement to form two rigid side members to unite the head and foot portions of my bed-lounge. As the foot portion of my bed-lounge is carried outward the bedbottom B will be unrolled from the roller F, the pawl 6 having been previously thrown out of engagement with the ratchet 3 until the side members D and O and D and C have been latched. The operator then throws into engagement the pawl e and uses the handle H to turn the roller F to strain into a fiat condition the canvas bed-bottom B. The seatcushion A would have been raised and held in a vertical position by the toggle-bars 10 when the lids K and K are opened, so that the bed-clothing may be removed from the receptacle.

Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is

In a lounge of the character described, the combination with a rectangular receptacle, of two head-posts secured along one side of said receptacle, two arm-posts secured along the opposite side to said receptacle, a cushioned back uniting said head-posts, a slotted bar uniting said arm posts, a side panel hinged to each of said arm-posts, a second side panel secured to each of aforesaid side panels, latches secured to said side panels to lock said panels in alinement, a stub side panel hinged to each of said second-mentioned panels, forminga continuation of said hinged side panels, traveling posts secured to said stub side panels, a transverse bracebar uniting said traveling foot-posts, a seatcushion hinged to said brace-bar, a slotted roller supported in aforesaid stub side panels, a ratchet secured to said roller, a pawl secured to one of said stub side panels and working in conjunction with said ratchet, and a bed-bottom secured to aforesaid slotted bar, and to said slotted roller substantially as and in the manner set forth.
