UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HENRY TAYLOR, OF BLOOMFIELD, NEIV JERSEY.
STOVE-RANG E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,628, dated April 1,1890.
Application filed January L, 1890- Serial No. 385,921. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HENRY TAYLOR, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Bloomfield, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Ranges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to prevent the smoke and the odors arising from the articles being cooked upon the range from eseaping into the room and to provide a convenient device for hanging towels or other articles upon to dry.
The invention consists in a hood secured to the breast of the chimney and arranged in a series of hinged sections to fold up when not in use and of a wire formed into a loop and secured to the lower section of said hood, all as hereinafter set forth and shown.
In said drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a cooking-range and my improvement in connection therewith. Fig. 2 represents a section, through line to, of the same; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hood and towel rack or support.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures where they occur.
Referring to the drawings, a indicates the several hinged sections of the hood.
1) indicates wings arranged at each end of the hood, 0 the towel-rack, and d hooks to hold the wings in position when the device is in use.
The range itself is constructed in the ordinary manner and is not my invention.
In carrying out my invention I make the front portion of the hood of a number of narrow strips or sections a, of sheet metal, united by hinge-joints, as indicated. To the lower section of the hood I attach a wire loop 0, as shown, for the purpose above stated. The upper section is permanently secured to the ehiinney breast or to plates 1), attached thereto, as will be understood, the several sections being designed when not in use to fold or close upon one another, and, finally, to rest or lie upon the aforesaid upper section out of the way, as will be manifest. The wings I) are convex at the outer or front edge and are provided with a flange e, projecting inwardly and forming a seat or support for the hood to rest upon when unfolded, as will be understood. by reference to dotted lines in Fig. I. Said wings are also hinged to the breast of the chimney or to the aforesaid plates Z), and fold either inward or outward against the chimney when not in use, as will be manifest upon reference to Figs. 2 and 3. hen said wings are open for use, they are held in proper position by suitable hooks d, as indicated in Fig. 2.
The hood projects outward from the chimney about even with the front of the range and is elevated above the top of the range far enough to leave the latter easily and conveniently accessible. chimney-breast eommuni eating with the chimney-flue and covered with a perforated plate f, whereby the smoke and fumes are carried into and up the chimney by the draft induced by the hood, as will be obvious.
The wings may be composed of one or more hinged sections, as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. The combination of the hinged sections a and the wings 1), adapted to be secured to the chimney-breast and arranged in relation to one another and operating as described, for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the hinged sections a, the wings I), and the loop 0, arranged in relation to one another and operating as described, for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of December, 1889.
JOHN HENRY TAYLOR. lVitnesses:
CHARLES II. PELL, OSCAR A. MIoHnL.
