DUST- PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 299,294, dated May 27, 1884:.
Application filed April 10, T88 1. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, SALATHIEL 0. SWEET- sON, of Island Falls, Aroostook county, Maine, have invented a new and Improved Dust-Pan, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved dust-pan, which is so 0011- structed that it can be used for cleaning dust out of angles, and can alsobe used for dropping the dust into small openings of a stove, 850.
The invention consists in a dustpan formed of a piece of sheet metal having its side edges vof the same.
bent up to form flanges, of which one is higher than the other, the lower flange having its lap edge beveled from the rear toward the front.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a rear end view Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional eleva tion of the same on the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
A piece of sheet metal, A, has its side edges bent up to form the side flanges, B B, of which the former is higher than the latter, the flange B having its upper edge bent inward, so that the inner surface of the said flange will be grooved. The flange B has a uniform height throughout, and the upper edge of the flange B is beveled from the rear end of the pan to the front, the front end of the flange B being raised but slightly above the plate A. In the rear end of the pan a wooden or metal crosspiece, 0, is held, to which the plate A is fastened, from the outer surface of which cross The pan can be piece the handle D projects.
painted, japanned, galvanized, the. That corner of the pan at the front end of the flange B can be used to great advantage to clean out angles, scoop out flour, dust, &c., from the bottom of barrels, boxes, &o., and if the pan is slightly inclined the dust, &c., on the same will slide toward the flange B, and will be held by the same, and if' the flat part of the pan is held quite vertically the dust, &c., can slide down on the inside of the flange B, and can be easily dumped into a stove-opening, 850., without spilling any of the dust.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A dust-pan made substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of sheetmetal plate A, having two side flanges, B and B, of which the former is higher than the latter, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. A dust-pan made of a sheet-metal plate. having two side flanges, B B, of which the latter has its upper edge inclined from the back of the pan down to the front, substantially as herein shown and described. 7
3. A dust-pan'made of a sh'eetmetal plate having two side flanges, B and B, of which the former is curved, as shown, and the other flange, B, has its upper edge inclined from the back down to the front, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. In a dust-pan, the combination, with a plate, A, having a flange at each side edge, of the cross-piece 0, having a handle, D, substantially as herein shown and described.
