E. L. FLOOD. COMBINED STOVE HEARTH AND ASH BOX.
No. 520,591. Patented May 29, 1894.
iiilll EDVARD L. FLOOD, OF SAVOY, ARKANSAS.
COMBINED STOVE-HARTH AND ASH-BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 520,591, dated May 29,1 894.
Application tiled February 28,1894. Serial No. 501,828. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
YBe it known that l, EDWARD L. FLOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savoy, in the county ot Washington and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful Combined Stove-Hearth and Ash-Box, of which the following isa specification.
My invention has special reference to an improvement in those hearths wherein a removable ash-box is attached;- and it consists of certain improved features of construction, whereby the ashes may be more ettectually gathered and moved, and one in which the box may be continually attached and operating, to receive the ashes as fast as formed, and all in a more eicient mannerth'an ordinarily.
In the accompanying drawingsz-Figure l represents a longitudinal section of a stovehearth supplied with my improvements; Fig. 2 a detailed perspective view of the ash-box or drawer; Fig. 3 a perspective View of the hearth with the stove-body broken away; Fig. 4 a perspective view of thel lid for closing the opening in the hearth; and Fig. 5 a cross section of the hearth and its lattachments.
The reference letter a indicates the hearth of the stove to which my improvements are shown as applied, and this may be of any class, though I prefer to have it constructed with the deepened recess a and gradually tapering up toward the grate, as at a2. Formed on the bottom of -the hearth a, is the extension h, which is provided to admit the recess ct. This extension is provided with the longitudinal guides c, which extend across the longitudinal extent of the extension.
d indicates the ash-box or receptacle, which is formed of an integral piece of sheet metal joined to the cast iron front piece d', by means of rivets or other suitable fastening devices. The rear end of the box d slopes outwardly at d2, while the sides are provided at their upper edges with the outwardly projecting flanges e. These flanges are adapted to be received by the longitudinal guides c, whereby the box is removably secured to the bottom of the hearth, the front piece d being raised so as to project around the front edge By this means a comof the extension b.
paratively tight joint Yis formed. Secured to the front plate d of the box d, is the bail or handle f, by which the box may be withdrawn, and to assist in carrying the same after being so withdrawn, the second bail f is provided and secured to the left hand side of the box near its rear edge. Formed in the front portion of the hearth a and in the recess a is a slot g. This slot extends transversely across the hearth for a distance equal to the width of the box d, and is adapted for the passage of coals and ashes into the same. The upper edge of the slot gis formed With a rabbet groove h therein, and this is adapted for the reception of the flange 1" of the lid z',
which flange is ot such a size that it tits snugly within the groove and forms a tight joint, one which will prevent the passage of ashes through the slot. The lid i has the finger openings lo therein, whereby it may be lifted.
In operation the box d is placed in position and the lid rl removed. The ashes from the tire will then fall into the hearth a and thence through slot g and into the box d, where they can be left until the box is filled.v Then the box may be withdrawn, as before explained, and the ashes carried away. During this latter operation, emptying the box d, the lid t' should be placed in its place in slot g so as to prevent the ashes from falling through on the floor during the absence of the box d. When the box is returned to its place, the lid should be removed.
By means of my invention the frequent cleaning ofthe hearth is prevented and the dust and dirt attending this operation dis'- pensed with.
It will be understood that the application of my invention is not limited to stoves of the particular class here shown, but it is capable of use in connection with any kind of stove or furnace. l
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-a In a stove, the combination of a hearth adapted toprimarily receive the ashes from the lire, said hearth being formed witha slot extending transversely across the same and through which the ashes are adapted to pass,
an ash-pan removably secured to the under In testimony that I claim the foregoing as side of the hearth and adapted to receive the myoWn I have hereto aiixed my signature in :o ashethrcugh the slot, and a removable lid the presence of tWo witnesses. capa 1e o fitting in and closing said slot in 5 the hearth, whereby as the ash-pan is re- EDWARD L' FLOOD moved the lid may be placed on the slot so Witnesses: as toclose the same and prevent the escape J. F. LADD, of ashes therefrom, substantially as described. E. E. ELLIOTT.
