UXILIARY Garmin' i 5de M i i u geometri, if, 1 y est haarethet L. Lessa .GaRrrEaBACIt-f u Iowapliavei .t t invented n i isili ''Ahi iliary'Girats for Stoves and Ranges, of which the following is ya specifica@ OIl. y l
This invention relatesto improvements in i auxiliary grates designed especially for use with cook stoves or ranges; and the objects I have in view are to provide a grate of this character that can be quickly placed in an ordinary coal-burning stove or range and supported a distance from the bottom of the lire box so as to forni a suitable grate for use `in burning Wood.
As coal-burning stoves or ranges are usually constructed 'they are provided with a deep fire-box having a `coal grate at the bottoni thereof, below which is an ash pit and stoves ofthis character are not convenient for' use in burning Wood, the fire-box being too deep. YThis invention con ists generally in the constructions and combinations hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In -the accompanying drawingsmforining part'of this s eciiication Figure l is a side elevation, part y in section, of a stove orrange having my improved auxiliary grate applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the auxiliary grate. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line of Fig. 2. Figa is a transverse section on the line 4-4 oll Fig. 2.
In Ithe drawings, 2 represents the tire-box coal burning stove or range and 3 the usual coal grate thereof. I rovide an auxiliary gra-.te that -is capable o being supported u `on the upper edges of the Walls of the tire box in any desired position,

"For:supporting the `auiviliary grate l. pro vide the rearh angers b which are adapted to Jrestat-:their -upper ends upon the top ot' the `rear wall ol the `lire box and are provided with `the horizontal lower portions having suitable slots which are engaged by the bolt 6 and by a corresponding boltt. "lhe arrangement of these boltsin the longitudinal slots ot the auxiliary grate permit the hangs ers to be adjusted longitudinally ol' the grate so as to bring them into any desired position for supporting the grate.
'lrhe plates t and 5 are each provided at their forward edge with an tip-turning lug t) and a slotted hanger l0 is connected to each ot these lugs by means of a suitable bolt it.
iThis arrangement permits the hangers l() to be adjusted so as to suitably engage the upper edge of the forward wall oll the 'lire-box and in connection with the rear hangers o' to hold the auxiliary grate n a horizontal position.
This structure provides an auxiliar),r grate adaptedrtjo stoves or ranges oll various kinds. ',lhe auxiliary grate is longitudinally adjustable and may therel'ore be nnide to snit the length ol the 1irebox ith n'hieh the device is to be used and the arrangement ol' the hangers permits the auxiliary grate to be supported in a horizontal position even though there may be considerable variation in the height oll the l'ront and rear walls ol' the lire-bo.\.
'lhc device is simple in eonstrurtion and may be readily put into or taken out ol' any ordinary stove or range.
I do not limit, nrvselll to the details oll vor: struction as the saine may be varied in many ars without departing l'roln nrv invention.
I claim as nrv invention:
I. 'lhe roinbilnition, with a stove or range, ol'l an auxiliary grate comprising overlapping plates l and 5 having longitudinal slots therein, bolts t5 and 7 passing through the slots in the overlapping ends ol` snid plates and adjustnbly seeuring thein together, 'rear hangers S adapted to rest at their upper end upon the rear n all olE the lire boi: und having slotted horizontal lower portienn; through with said lugs end'having upperportions adapted to rest on therl'orward Wall of the i lire box Wherebj)T ,the said grate can be ad justed to accommodate itself to the stove in which it is placed, substantiallyes described. 2. The combination, with a stove 0r range,
' of an auxilialf grate eoniprisngplutes over- Well of the lire box and having lower portiensI edgustahly connected to said plates,
and said plates having upwardly turned lugs at their forward edges and hangers `adjustg ably connected with said lugs ndhaving upperportions adapted to rest on .theforL wurd Wall of the fire box, whereby the grate I can be adjusted to rameornrnodate itself to the Astove in Whieh itis placed. y Y
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my 20 hand this 9th dayof October 1906.A
