Description

.1. A. LAWSGN.
Ash Pan.
No'. 38,902. Patented .lune I6, 1863.
Tril/enfon- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. LAWSON, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-PANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,9'02, dated .I une 16, 1863; antedated April 7, 1863.
To allwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. LAwsoN, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ash-Pan Drawer for Stoves, Furnices, &c.; and I do therefore hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which said drawings make a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like or corresponding parts.
Figure 1 is` a perspective of the ash-pan drawer. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing the handle and bail, hereinafter described. Fig.3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross vertical section near to the bail, hereinafter described. Fig. 5 is a vertical section lengthwise of the ash-pan drawer, siowin g the bail, hereinafter described, in use. Fig. 6 is a top view of the ash-pan drawer.
The nature of my improvements consists in s0 attaching or combining a bail with the ash-pan drawer of any stove or furnace as to allow the same to be drawn therefrom and carried to any place of deposit, whereby the ashes therein may be emptied therefrom by said bail and a handle upon the front end of said drawer, by means of which there will be no ashes or dust arising in the room when the stove or furnace is used, nor any necessity for the use of or any change of said ashes into another vessel or means of conveyance before the same shall have reached the place of deposit for the same.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvements, I will here proceed to give a description of the construction and operation of the same.
I make a pan of cast or wrought iron, like Fig. 1, of any size or capacity required, as seen at A, said figure. Upon the inside of the said pan, and near the top of the same, I construct stops c a, Fig. 6, which are also seen at Figs. 4 and 5. These stops are placed at a short distance one side of the center point of the said ash-pan, so that when the bail C, Figs. 4, 5, and 6, comes in conjunction therewith the said ashpan shall equally balance, or nearly so, and always keep in a v proper'condition while being carried with ashes therein. These stops are back of the said center line, as seen at c, Fig. 5, so that by raising the front end of the said ash-pan drawer by the handle B, Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, the said pan will dump or be raised up sufficient to allow the ashes or other material therein to pass out therefrom at the back end thereof. When the said ash-pan drawer is in the stove, in use, the said bail C will be in the position as seen at Figs. 1,2, and 6. At the front end of the said ash-pan drawer there are recesses b b, Figs. 1, 2, and 6, which are for the purpose of receiving the said bail C, which will then project beyond, as seen at Figs. 5 and 6, whereby the same will remain cool, and not be heated so as to render the same unfit for use, but will always be in condition for the use intended. The said ashpan drawer may be drawn from the stove or furnace, when used, by the said bail while in the said position. (Seen at Figs. 5 and 6, also at Figs. l aud 2.) The said bail C, when the said ash-pan drawer is in use in any stove or furnace, will remain as aforesaid, which, when in use for the purpose of removing the said ash-pan drawer from the room where said stove or furnace is used, will be in position, asv seen at Figs. 4 and 5, and the said ash-pan drawer will remain in position in relation thereto, as seen at said Fig. 5, being prevented from turning or dumping by means of the said stops c a, Figs. 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, the said bail being somewhat in front of the center line or point ofthe said ash-pan drawer, as aforesaid, whereby the same can be carried without hinderance. l
This is a simple, cheap, and convenient ashpan drawer.
These improvements may be applied to any other kind of ash-pan drawer.
Having thus describedmy improvements in ash-pan drawers for stoves, Ste., whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is-
'lhe bail C, in combination with the ashpan drawer A, and with the stops a a and handle B, substantially as and for the purposes as herein described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have, on this `16th day of January, 1863, hereto set my hand.
. JAS. A. LAWSON.
