Description

E. MINGIAY. Ash Lifting Device in Cooking Stoves. No. 55,587. Patented June 12, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD MINGAY, OF BOSTON, ASSIGNOR TO THE BOSTON AND MAINE FOUNDRY COMPANY, OF SOUTH READING, MASSACHUSETTS.
ASH-SIFTING DEVICE IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 55,587, dated June 12, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD MINGAY, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l is a top view, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of a stove pror'ided with my invention, the latter section being taken through the ash-chamber and the sifting-hod, to be hereinafter described.
The nature of my invention or improvement consists in an improved arrangement or manner of combining, with the fire-place and the ash-chamber of the stove, a siftinghod and its supports, the hod-chamber being provided at its top with an opening through which the said hod may be either removed from or inserted within the ash-chamber, as circumstances may require.
In the drawings, A denotes an ordinary cooking-stove, of which B is the tire-place, O the grate thereof, and D the ash-chamber, provided with a drawer, E, the whole being arranged in manner as represented-tl1at is to say, the ash-chamber is both underneath and in advance of the fire-place, and is provided with a large mouth or opening, F, at its top part. Such ash-chamber also has ledges or rails G G extending across it, one being at each end of it. These rails are arranged so as to support a sifting-hod, H, formed as represented in perspective in Fig. 4:, and being provided with a bail or handle, a, and having a grating or perforated bottom, I).
The side 0 of the hod is curved, as shown in Fig. 2, in order not only to form a spout or nose for the easy discharge of coal from the hod, but to enable the hod to be extended underneath the grate of the fireplace, in manner as represented in such figure.
Furthermore, there is a hole, 9, made through the front upright plate, h, of the stove, and there is also another such hole, 1', madethrough the front of the hod, the same being to enable an implement, 1', formed as exhibited in Fig. 5, to be introduced into the hole g and hooked to the hod, such implement serving to enable a person to move the 110d back and forth with a a quick motion on its supporting rails orledges, in order at any time to sift the ashes from the coal which may be within the 110d whileit may be within the ash-chamber.
By means of the hod so made the coal may be lifted out of the ash-chamber, and either be poured back into the fire-place or be emptied into any suitable receptacle.
I am aware that it is not new to apply a sifting-grate underneath the grate of a fireplace and over an ash-receiver, and therefore I do not claim such as my invention.
I am also aware that a sifting-drawer has been arranged entirely in front of a fire-place, and an inclined plane leading from the said fire-place and underneath the grate thereof.
I am also aware of the invention shown in Letters Patent No. 47 ,7 68, in which a siftinghod provided with a spout is employed, the said hod and the chamber for its reception being so made as to enable the spout only of the hod to go underneath the grate, the same requiring all the coals and ashes which may fall through the grate to be raked forward into the siftin g part of the body of the hod.
I lay no claim to the three last-mentioned arrangements, my invention being an improvement on them, as by it I am not only enabled to dispense with the inclined plane necessary to conduct the ashes into the hod, and thereby impart to the oven a better form, but to save all necessity of raking forward into the hod the cinders and ashes which may be discharged through the grate.
What therefore I claim is My improved construction of the sifting-hod, as described, and the arrangement of itand its chamber so as to extend directly underneath the grate, in order to cause the coals or ashes, when discharged from the grate, to pass vertically into the hod without first falling on an inclined plane or such a spout leading into such hod as to require the said ashes to be raked from it into the hod.
EDWARD MINGAY.
