IMPROVEMENT IN CQOKlNG-STOVES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEMUEL DUNHAM, of Lincoln Centre, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented a new and improved Gombined Heating and Cook-Stove; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in stoves; and

It consists in a cooking attachment to what is known as the Franklin heating-stoves, as hereinafter described. 1

I propose to attach to the back and top of a Frank-- lin heating-stove A, or other stove of the same general character, of any approved pattern, a cooking apparatus, consisting of a case, B, similar to that part of an ordinary cooking-stove above the fire-place containing the oven, up which I conduct the heat by a flue, O; and I also place) an oven, D, in it, and the ordinary pot-holes, with removable cross-bar at the top; also the stovepipe connection E, for conducting away the vproducts of combustion.

And for the purpose of applying the heat more directly to the cooking attachment than would be the case if the fire was made when cooking at the bottom of the stove A, in the usual place, I arrange the grate F so that it can be readily taken from its position at the-bottom, and placed on supports G, just below the lower edge of the front plate H of stove'A, and at one end of the latter above the grate-I'- provide a door, I, for introducing the fuel above the grate,

To enable me to arrange the grate at this place, I arrange the back plate J, which -in the ordinary Franklin stove pitches forward to throw out the heat, so that it may turned backward parallel with the vertical wall of the back plate of the stove.

This back plate is in this instance held in either position by the sliding plate K, lying upon the bot, tom plate of flue C, and having a groove L in the under side, near the front edge, in which the upper edge of the back plate bears.

The friction ofthe plate K on the flue bottom will hold, the back plate in any position.

I propose to arrange a damper, N, on the top of the oven, to close one of the side vertical passages, so as to cause the heat to rise up along the ends more that it otherwise would.

By this simple arrangement I am enabled not only to utilize the stove A for cooking purposes, but I also very greatly-increase the efliciency of the same for heating purposes, for the cooking attachment adds greatly to the radiating surface.

In connection with this cooking attachment the paltAmay have pot-holes and a removable crossbar at the top, whereby it may also be, in consequence of the grate being placed so near it, equally asfserviceable for cooking as the corresponding part of an ordinary cook-stove.

The advantages of my improved stove in families which require a combined heating and cook-stove will be readily appreciated from the foregoing description.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. The pipe connection E, chamber B, and fine 0, combined as described, with, and arranged above, the adjnstably-grated Franklin stove A, for the purpose specified. p

2. The end-grooved plate K, movable on the horizontal bottom of flue O, to adjust. the back wall J, and hold it by friction in any position, as described.
