COOKING STOVE.

Letters Patent No. 88,914, dated A12/ril 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM G. SEMPLE, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cook-Stoves; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of my specication.
My improvements relate to devices for the more convenient and cleanly application of fuel and removal of ashes from the {ire-placeef a cook-stove.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stove embodying my improvements.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Figure 3 is a longitudinalsection of a portion of the stove, showing the ash-pan, or drawer removed,
land the gate extended across the ash-chute, to prevent the fall of ashes therefrom.
In order to aiord the greatest facility in feeding the fire, the top plate A has au extension, B, which, declining forward at an angle of about thirty-five degrees with the horizon, ts and rests upon a hopperlike projection, G, fromthe front plate D The extension B has an opening, b, and is closed by a door, E, having gudgeons e, by which said door is hinged to the front part of the extension'.
The rear ash-pit plate F slopes forward toward its lower edge, so as to leave a large and unobstructed oven-floor, and so as to discharge the ashes into the middle of the ash-pan G, which extends beneath the hearth-pla@ H from slides g.
h is an opening in the hearth-plate, to permit the passage of the ashes from the chute F, formed by the plate F and the front and side plates of the stove.
I is a gate, or cut-oli", to close said opening, for removal of the ash-pan, or to prevent any more ashes falling into the same when said pan is full. rDhis gate may be operated by means of a handle, t, which projects upward through a slot, h', in the hearth-plate.
That portion of the front plate which forms Vthe lower edge of the opening in front of the fire, has a forwardly and' upwardly-projecting iiange, J, which serves the double purpose of a fender, to coniine the ashes as they fall 'from the grate, and of a support for a broiler, when desired.
The feed-opening being situated at the very top of the fire-place, and inclining slightly forward, enables the addition of fuel without spillage of either fresh coal or embers.
rIhe ash-pan an'd chute being so relatively located as to charge the ashes into the middle of the pan, saves the necessity of afterwards shifting the ashes in the pan, and the consequent dust, and should the pan become full, communication may be cut olf by means of the gate I, and the ashes be allowed to collect above the gate until it is convenient to empty and return the ash-pan. l
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The ash-chute F, ash-pau G, hearth-plate H, and gate I,'arranged and adapted to operate as set forth.
2. The fender J, upon the front plate D, as and for the purposes stated.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand.

JAMES H. LAYMAN.
