Description

T-. F. ROMONEY. Improvement in Dust-Pans. N0. 114,351. APatented May 2,1871.

THOMAS F. ROONY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS;
Letters Patent No. 114,351,11aad may 2, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN DUST-PANS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, THOMAS F. ROONEY, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- Pans, of which the following is a full description, ref.
vto the door, to strengthen the pan and to prevent the curlingor warping of the front edge; and in providing the front corners with points or hooks to hold the 4front edge down to a carpet.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improved dust-pan, I will describe its construction and operation.
The body of the pan A with its sides and back are made and turned or stamped up in the usual manner, except the front edge of the bottom, across which I make a rib or bead, D, for the purpose o f strengthen ing the pan and preventing it from warping or bending so as to let the dirt under it, as usually happens to pans of the ordinary construction, and also to prevent the dust from sliding back onto the door after it has been swept into thevpap. 'I usually add a supplemental-y bead or rib, E, which cornes close to the edge and brings it in closeeontact with the carpet or door At each front corner I attach spurs or hooks F, they may be formed on the tin or other metal of which the pan-is made, or projections may be formed by extending the ends of thebinding line beyond the edge and sharpening them. When made this way a steel wire is preferred. They are turned or located so as to be slightly above the edge of the pan, so that in case they are used on a floor without carpets they will not hold the edge above the door, and when used with carpets `they are inserted into itgand operate to hold the edge tightly against such carpets.
,Ihe handle B is rolled up from a single blank, which has projections on the sides, which, when brought around together, form the point or rest C; or it may be made in halves or made in the usual manner, and the rest or point C is then made of a separate piece.
The rest may be made ot' any' desirable form, as itsA main oice is to hold the `pan in position for use Without taking hold of it with the hand, and as it may slip I prefer to make it with a sharp point, as shown, so that it will not slip on the door when used, and it' the haudle and rest are made of tin it will improve the rest vto solder in a small piece of steel 'wire so that the point can be made sharp. Two or more rests or points may be used if desired.
Having thus fully described my improved dust-pan',
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. The rest .or ipoint C and points F when applied to the backV and front ends, respectively, of a dust-pau for the purpose of holding itin position to secure the dust or dirt, as herein described. y
2. In a dust-pan, provided with a rest, C, and points F, arranged as described, the ribs D and E, as and for the purpose set forth.
