Application filed October 18, 1920. Serial no. 417,724. g,
' theblade and the other end 14. has a bearing f i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE L. CURTIss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plantsville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metal Handles for Trowels; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawingsand the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in- Figure 1, a plan view of a trowel provided with a metal handle constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig; 2, a side .view of the same. Fig. 3, a side view of the inner end handle portion detached.
Fig. 4:, an underside view of the same. Fig. 5, a sectional view on'the line 55 of Fig. 1, enlarged. This invention relates to an improvement in metal-handled trowels, and by the term trowels I wish to be understood as including of the The object of this invention is to provide a trowelwith a strip metal handle so ar-.
ranged as to give the necessary strength, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I'employ a trowel blade 10 of any approved design according to the purposes for which it is to be used. The handle is formed from a strip of metal doubled to form a loop grip 11, and the ends are brought together to form a shank 12. The end 13 of the upper portion of the strip is riveted to the upper face-of on the face of the blade closely adjacent to Specification of Letters Patent. Pat td Feb 2 2, 1921'; v
the end 13 and so that the upper and lower portions of the handle stand in the same vertical plane. Preferably, and as shown, the
loop handle is corrugated to give strength and to form'a grip handle, and preferably the end will be drawn to form integral studs 15 by which the'handle maybe riveted tothe blade or "the end 13' may be punched 1 to form holes for rivets. The strip thus pro vided with integral studs is bent to form the handle and the studsiarepassed; through holes formed for them in the trowel blade 10 and upset therein so as to firmly rivet the handle to the blade, or'it may be secured by separately-formed rivets, and when so riveted the end '14 of the handle bears upon the face of the blade just in rear of theriveted end 13, so as to form a rigid handle. I am' thus enabled to produce at a very low cost of manufacture and in a very simple manner a trowel provided with ametal handle, the ad vantages, of which over wooden handles are generally recognized. 1
I claim:
A trowel provided. with a metal handle,
said handle formed from a strip doubled to form a loop grip, one end of the strip" rivet ed to the trowel blade and the other end of the strip brought to a bearing on the face of the blade adjacent to the riveted end both portions of thehandle standing in the same vertical plane. V c
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses. i
-GEORGE-L. CURTISS.
