PAPER SHOVEL-BLADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 229,741, dated July 6, 1880.
Application filed May 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. MURPHY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Paper Shove1-Blade,'of which the following is a specification.
My invent-ion consists in making the blade of ashovel of compressed paper orpaper-board, in forms or dies, and then rendering it Waterproof if desired.
My invention also consists in the construction of shovel hereinafter described, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a shovel embracing myinven tion Fig. 2, a longitudinal vertical section of the same; and Fig. 3, details, showing the manner of fastening the wooden handle to the paper shovel-blade.
It is intended chiefly to be used as a grain or salt shovel, but can be used for many other purposes.
It is constructed as follows The paperboard, in a wet or semi-plastic state, about as it comes from a wet machine, is pressed over forms or between dies to the desired shape, dried there, and when removed it will always retain its shape. If the paper-board is not as thick as desired, two or more pieces can be I deem it best to make the blades water- (No model.)
proof by painting them with or dipping them into any ordinary waterproofing solution.
The drawing shows the blade of the shape used in ordinary scoop-shovels; but it can be also made of any shape desired other than that. It can also be bound or faced with iron or metal to protect the edges or front of the blade if desired.
This blade can be attached or fastened to the handle in any ordinary manner.
Referring to the drawings, the paper blade A is secured to the Wooden handle B by means of a socket or notch, a,in said blade, into which said handle is inserted and fastened by upper and lower metallic plates, b and c, riveted to the handle and to the blade, as shown. This gives a firm and secure fastening.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, as a new article 0 manufacture, is
1. A shovel-blade manufactured of compressed paper, as a new article of manufacture.
2. As a new manufacture, a paper shovelblade, as described, combined with a handle and plates or straps for securing the same, substantially as set forth.
