' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIJAH KIRKPATRICK AND SAMUEL OOPRON, OF GILBERTS MILLS, OHIO.
DITCHlNG-SPADE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 272,266, dated February 13, 1883.
Application filed October 11, 1882. (No model.)
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELIJAH KIRKPATRICK- and SAMUEL OQPRON, of Gilberts Mills, in
the county of Paulding and State of Ohio, have invented anew and Improved Ditching-Spade, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of our invention is to furnish a spade adapted for cutting large and small ditches, by which the work may be done with great ease and rapidity. 1
To that end our invention'consists in a spade provided with two blades 'at right angles to each other, or of a single blade bent in that form, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a side perspective view of our improved spade. Fig. 2 is a face view of the same.
AB are the blades'ot' the spade, which are attached at right angles,or nearly so,to each other. They may be formed of a single piece of metal, bent to the required shape,or of two separate pieces flanged or otherwise attached together so that theangle shall be closed. The blades are preferably made narrower at the outerorcuttin g end. At the inner end they are formed with straps on a for receiving the handle C, which is of the usual form.
In using this spade, when it is pushed'down to the ground both blades cut at once, so that a spadei'ul is obtained without the necessity of 5 lifting the spade again to cut the sides loose, as is required with the common spade.
This spade is particularly intended for the work of cutting out all kinds of ditches, and in that work its use will save considerable time and labor.
We are aware that it is old to employ a spade-blade with its body slightly depressed in the middle throughout its length, and to provide it with cutting-ears arranged at right angles thereto and near the outer end thereof.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a spade, the body of the same formed of two blades, A B, arranged at right angles to each other, and having the handle 0 connected thereto at their point of union or the angle formed by such union, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a spade, the body of the same formed of two blades, A B, arranged at right angles to each other, and having the straps a fastened thereto at their points of union and adapted to form a handle-socket, and the handle 0, fitted into and fastened to said socket, as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
