UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY S. GROSSLAND, OF DRESDEN, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEEDlNG-HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,149, dated August 26, 1873; application iiled May 17, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY S. CRossLAND, of Dresden, in the county of Navarro and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement inv weeding-Hoe, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a front view of my improved weeding-hoe. Fig. 2 is a detail section of the same taken through the line w, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of weeding-hoes; and it consists in providing the same with an inclined cutting-edge, in such a way that they will enter and pass through the ground more easily than hoes constructed in the ordinary manner, and which will prevent the soil from adhering to the blade of the hoe beneath the eye.
A represents the plate or blade of the hoe. Upon the upper edge of the back of the hoeplate A is formed an eye, al, to receive the The forward or cutting edge of the hoe-plate A is made inclined at an inclination of one-fourth of an inch for each inch in the length of said edge. The inclination of the said edge should be from right to left for a right-handed person, and from left to right for a left-handed person. This construction prevents the edge of the hoe from strikingthe ground squarely, and thus gives to the hoe a sliding cut, enabling it to pass through the ground more readily, so as to require a less exertion of power by the operator. In the blade A of the hoe, a little below the eye al, is formed a triangular or circular opening, a2, which prevents the soil, when wet or sticky, from adhering to the said blade. To compensate for the loss of strength from the opening a2 in the blade A, the upper part of said blade is made heavier or thicker, as shown in Fig. 2. The side of the blade A above the acuteangled corner should be made a little heavier than the other side, as the said longer side is subject to the greater Wear and strain.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hoe-blade, A, formed with an inclined forward or cutting edge, substantially as herein shown and described.
HENRY S. GROSSLAND.
