Description

GEBHARD IE. LEE, 0E AURORA, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
llatented May it), 1921.
Application filed May 8, 1920. Serial No. 379,890.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERHARD ld. LEE, a citizen of the United States, resicing at Aurora, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful lm provements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wrench and has for its primary object the construction of a wrench of a more substantial construc tion in which the parts are so shaped and associated that the expense of manufacture may be materially reduced without sacrificing the durability thereof.
An object of the invention is the novel manner of shaping the body and handle and jaw portions of the wrench of a single piece of material so shaped as to effectively engage the movable jaw and allow movement thereof.
A. feature of the invention is the novel manner of shaping the handle portion and riveting a block of wood within the handle portion so as to give rigidity thereto and ii ghtness.
With these and other objects in view the invention will be better understood from the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a side elevation of the wrench.
Fig. 2. is an edge elevation.
Fig. 3 is a plan View of stamped mate rial before it is given its final shape.
Tip. 4 is a top plan view.
' 5 is a sectional view on line 5-5 i. Fig. 6 is a sectional view on line i Li.
Again referring to the drawing illustrating one manner in which my invention may be constructed the numeral 1 designates a sheet of material, such. as steel, stamped to provide dlle handle portion 2, body portion 2-5, jaw extensions 4-, flange 5 and lugs 6. Giving the final shape the material is bent along the dotted lines B, C. D and it so as to form the hollow handle 7 and hollow body portion for the purpose hereinafter described. liiveted between the aw extens r l is a jaw block 8 while the movable jzuv block 9 is cut to provide the grooves 10 for slidably receiving the flanges 5 and provided witn a shank portion 11 slidable in the body portion 3. This shank is provided with teeth 12 cooperating with the catch 18 that is pivoted to the lugs 6. A spring 14 forces the catch into engagement with the teeth. A wood insert 15 is arranged in the handle and riveted thereto so as to strengthen the handle portion.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that i provide a wrench of a substantial construction in which the parts are so arranged and associated that the weight of the wrench is materially reduced without decreasing the strength thereof. it will also be noted that the cost of manufacture will be greatly reduced as the main parts may be stamped and shaped in one operation.
it is, of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in different relations and, therefore, I do not desire to be limited in any manner except as set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
it. it wrench comprising a single sheet of metal cut and bent to provide a handle portion, a body portion having spaced flanges, and spaced jaw extensions, a jaw block riveted between the extensions, and a movable jaw block having slots receiving the flanges of the body portion.
2. A wrench comprising a single sheet of metal out and bent to provide a handle portion, a body portion having spaced flanges, and spaced jaw extensions, a jaw block riveted between the extensions, and a movable j aw block having slots receiving the flanges of the body portion, and a locking device pivoted to the handle portion for locking the jaw in adjusted position.
3. A wrench constructed from a single piece of material bent to form a hollow handie portion, lugs projecting from the handle portion, a body portion, flanges projecting from the body portion, jaw extensions proecting from the body portion a jaw block riveted between the aw extensions, a aw block slidably supported by the flanges and body portion and provided with a toothed shank, a catch cooperating with the teeth of the shank for locking the jaw in adjusted position, and a wood insert arranged in and riveted to the said handle portion.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
GERHARD M. LEE.
