M? 478020, Maia v. WASHINGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' CLINTON \V. RICHARDSON, OF- BATH, NEW YORK.
DUST-PAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,843, dated June 13, 1899.
' Application filed September 6,1898. Serial No. 690,347. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLINTON W. RICHARD- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bath, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has for its object to provide a simple, cheap, and durable dust-pan of that class in which provision is made for emptying the dust and dirt from the rear thereof; and it consists in a dust-pan of the form and construction substantially as shown in the drawings and hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective view of a dust-pan constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 a transverse vertical section through the rear end of the pan taken on line a; m of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, A representsthe bottom of the dust-pan, and B the usual upwardly-extending side flanges, which are preferably formed from the same piece of sheet metal as the bottom. The bottom A decreases in width in a direction from its front to its rear end to form a contracted discharge for the dust and dirt, thereby enabling the contents of the pan to be more conveniently deposited into a stove through the opening thereof or into any suitable dust-receptacle.
The rear end of the pan is without the usual transverse flange or back, but is left open to form a permanently-unobstructed discharge for the dust and dirt.
The pan at its rear end is provided with a concavo-convex instep-plate for the foot of the person using the pan, and the plate may be made separately from the bottom and afterward secured thereto over an opening or notch cut in the bottom or may be formed from the same blank of sheet metal from which the bottom is constructed,as found most desirable. Directly on line with and under the plate C is a suitable stirrup D constructed from a strip of sheet metal with its ends secured to the pan in any convenient manner.
In using the dust-pan the foot of the person is placed through and upon the stirrup D, the instep coming against the under side or concave of the plate C.' The addition of the instep-plate, in connection with the stirrup, enables the dust-pan to be firmly held by the foot and moved laterally in either direction or forward or backward, as found necessary, and without the pan becoming accidentally detached from the foot.
The concavo-convex instep-plate C is considered of material importance in that it enables the foot to be inserted through the stir rup D far enough to hold the pan firmly without hurting the instep, A pan with the stirrup and without the instep-plate would be objectionable, as the sharp edge of the pan when not concave would hurt the instep of the user in thrusting the foot through the stirrup far enough to hold the pan.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Adust-pan comprisingabottom decreasing in width in a direction from its front to its rear end and provided wit-h flanges upon its sides only with a permanently open or unobstructed rear end to'facilitate emptying the dirt therefrom, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dust-pan comprising a bottom of decreased width at its rear end, upwardly-extending flanges upon the sides only of said bottom to leave a perfectly-unobstructed rear end to facilitate emptying the dirt therefrom, a concavo-convex instep-plate, and a stirrup extending below the plane of the bottom of the pan, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
CLINTON \V. RICHARDSON.
