DUST-PAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,299, dated November 9, 1897.

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN J EKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spokane, in the county of Spokane and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Dust- Pan, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to dust-pans, its object being to provide a dust-pan with a contracted or funnel-shaped rear end provided with a discharge opening, a cover or lid hinged or otherwise movably connected to the dust-pan to close the opening, and a device to lock the cover in its closed position.

The invention will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved dust-pan. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the dust-pan, the hinged cover being open.

Similar reference-numerals indicate similar parts in the several figures.

1 represents the bottom of the dust-pan, which is concavo-convex in longitudinal section and which is wider at its front than at its rear end. The side edges of the bottom are curved inwardly toward each other at their rear ends, as indicated at 2. The sides of the dust-pan are represented by 3,and these sides gradually increase in height from their front to their rear ends. The sides may be formed integrally with the bottom or may be soldered or otherwise attached to it, as preferred.

4 represents the hood, extending across the pan at its rear portion and secured to the upper edges of the sides 3 in any suitable manner. The rear ends of the sides 3 are curved outwardly and downwardly, as indicated at 5, and these curved portions extend beyond the rear edge of the hood 4. By this construction a contracted funnel-shaped end is provided for the dust-pan through which the contents may be readily discharged into a stove through one of its openings or into any other receptacle without scattering the dust, lint, 850., which is frequently the case when the contents of the dust-pan are discharged from the broad front end.

In order to close the opening 6 at the rear end of the pan, a lid or cover 7 is hinged at one edge to the rear edge of the hood 4, as indicated at S. This lid or cover is concavoconvex in crosssection. and is so curved as to fit snugly over the curved ends 5 of the sides 3, with its lower end in close engagement with the rear edge of the bottom 1 of the dustpan, below which it extends a short distance, as indicated at 9. The side and bottom edges of the cover are reinforced with a wire 10 in the usual manner, as are also the top and rear edges of the sides and the rear edge of the bottom.

11 represents a spring-catch firmly secured at one end to the under surface of the bottom of the dust-pan and extending forward to fit over the free edge of the lid or cover 7. The lid or cover is provided with a depression 12 just above its reinforcing-wire, and the spring-catch is provided with a hooked portion 13 to fit into the depression 12 and with a forwardly-extending finger-piece 14, by

means of which the spring-catch may be disengaged from the depression in the lid or cover.

15 represents a stirrup extending over the 18 represents a brace secured at one end to the lid or cover 7 and at its opposite end to the handle for the purpose of strengthening the connection between the two.

WVhile I have illustrated and described the lid or cover as hinged to the dust-pan, I do not intend to limit myself to this mode of connection between the two parts, but consider any means by which the lid is movably connected to the dust-pan to be within the scope of my invention.

In operation the dirt, lint, &c., will be brushed into the dust-pan in the ordinary manner, and by elevating the front end of the dust-pan all the rubbish therein will be directed into the rear portion of the dust-pan, when by releasing the spring-catch 11 the lid or cover 7 may be turned on its hinge and the rubbish discharged through the contracted opening 6 into a stove or other receptacle without scattering the dust, 850., over the stove or outside the receptacle, as is frequently the case when the rubbish is discharged from the wide front end of the dust-pan, and which scattering is a source of great annoyance to a careful housekeeper. This annoyance will be entirely obviated by the use of my invention.

It will be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A dust-pan having a discharge-opening at its rear end, in combination with a lid or cover attached to the handle of the pan and movably connected to the dust-pan to open or close said opening, and a locking device to hold the lid in its closed position, substantially as described.

2. A dust-pan having its bottom and sides curved inwardly at their rear ends to form a contracted funnel-shaped discharge-opening at the rear of the pan, a hood secured to the upper edges of the sides at their rear ends, and a cover or lid attached to the handle of the pan and movably connected to the pan to close the discharge-openin g, and a locking device to hold the lid in its closed position, substantially as described.

3. The combination with the bottom of a dust-pan having its side edges inwardly curved at their rear ends, side pieces inwardly bent at their rear ends and having their rear edges curved outwardly and downwardly, a hood secured to the upper edges of the side pieces, a lid or cover hinged to the rear edge of the hood and curved to fit over the curved rear edges of the sides, and a,

spring-catch secured to the bottom with its free end adapted to engage the free edge of the lid or cover, substantially as described.

4. The combination with the bottom of a dust pan having its side edges inwardly curved at their rear ends, side pieces inwardly bent at their rear ends and having their rear edges curved outwardly and downwardly, a hood secured to the upper edges of the side pieces, a lid or cover hinged to the rear edge of the hood and bent to fit over the curved rear edges of the sides, a springcatch secured to the bottom with its free end adapted to engage the free edge of the lid 01' cover, and a handle attached to the hinged cover, substantially as described.
