To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Proo'r'r, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Santa Barbara, in the county of San ta Barbara and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Dust-Pan, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention has for its object to provide a dust pan having a scoop which leads up to a container for receiving the dust, there being an opening in the container for removing the dust, and which is normally closed by a door.

Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.

In the drawings, similar reference characters denote similar parts in. all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 3;

Fig. '2 is a sectional fragmentary view showing how the dust is removed from the container; and

Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the dust pan is constructed with a container 5 having a bottom 6, sides 7, a back or rear wall 8, a cover 9, and a front wall 10, the front wall 10 not extending as high as the cover 9, so that there will be an openin 11 through which the dust may be directed into the interior of the container 5. The dust pan is provided with a scoop 12 Which extends forwardly and downwardly at right angles.

It will be seen that the dust pan may rest on the bottom 6 of the container, and that the scoop 12 will be disposed at an angle to the ground and its forward edge 15 bedisosed at the ground, so that the' dust may e swept up into the scoop 12 and through the opening 11 into the container. When the dust passes over the top of the front wall 10 down and into the container 5, the angle formed by the front wall 10 and the scoop 12 will prevent the dust from leaving the container 5 through the opening 11 under normal conditions. I provide it with a handle 16 which is secured to the container 5 at the top of its back or rear wall 8, the portion 17 of the handle 16 preferably extending over the cover 9 of the container to which it is secured at 18. In the back or rear wall 8 of the container, below the handle 16, the .e is a doorway 19 which is normally closel by a door 20, this door 20 being hinged to the back or rear wall 8 of the container at the top of the doorway 19, at 21, sprngs 22 being provided for holding the do or 20 yieldingly closed, in a manner readily understood. Secured to the door 20 there is an arm 23, this arm 23 being disposed directly under the handle 16, so that it may be pressed upwardly and against the handle 16 to open the door, the dust from the container passing through the doorway 19 when the do )I 20 is opened and the dust pan is tilted, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. When tlte dust is removed from the container in this manner, it should be noted that the door 20 serves to direct the dust downwardly, a1 .d that the movement of the door 20 away fr )m the doorway 19 is limited by the arm 23 and the handle 16, so that when the door is opened the door will be positioned to check the rearward movement of the dist as it passes outwardly through the doc rway 19.

Having thus escribed my invention, what I claim as new tnd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1.
