Attorney-8' Patented Oct. 22, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in cleaning implements and more particularly to a receptacle, generally known as a dustpan for collecting dust and other debris swept into the same.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a dustpan having a cover which can be conveniently held in an upright position and which in upright position will serve as a guard to prevent dirt being swept into the pan from carrying over onto the hand of the person holding the pan.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the fol- 16 lowing specification:
In the drawings: Figure 1 represents a top plan view.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2--2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional View also substantially no on line 22 of Figure l but showing the lid in elevated position.
Figure 4 is a plan View of the operating lever. Figure 5 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the hinge means in exploded position. Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevational View looking substantially in the direction of the line E6 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the pan proper is in the form of a scoop having the botton 5 and the inclined side walls 6, these walls being inclined outwardly and decreasing in height gradually from the back wall l forwardly. The top of the back wall I has the short rearwardly 5 extending ledge 8 upon which the hinge structure shown in Figure 5 is mounted. This hinged structure consists of the plate 9 having the barrels 10 extending therefrom and this plate 9 is riveted or otherwise secured to the rear portion of the lid ll.
Secured on the ledge 8 by rivets or the like is the hinge plate l2 having the barrels 13 on one longitudinal edge and the barrels I4 on the other longitudinal edge. The barrels l3 interlap the barrels Ill of the plate 9 and a pin I5 is disposed through these barrels l0 and I3 to connect the lid i! to the hinge plate 12.
The lever for operating the lid H is generally referred to by numeral 16 and this consists of the elongated heavy wire member bent to form the loop-like handle H from which portions extend laterally as at |8-l8 in opposite directions and then curve backwardly as at l9-l 9 bending again to form parallel legs 2020 terminating in eyes 2I2l, which eyes receive the laterally extending trunnion portions 22-22 of the U- shaped link 23, the bight portion of which is disposed through the barrel 24 on the plate 25, the latter being secured by rivets or the like 26 to the 9 top portion of the lid II.
It can be seen that with the lever 16 connected with the hinge plate l2, the lateral portions l8--l8 extending through the barrels M-Ifl (and with the eyes 2 l--2l receiving the trunnions 22-22 of the link 23) the parts are related in such a manner that by moving the handle I! backwardly to engage the main handle 21, the lid II will be lifted to the elevated position shown in Figure 3, so that dirt or other debris can be swept is on to the pan. After the dirt or debris has been swept onto the pan the lid I I can be lowered and the resilient strip 28 which depends from the trough construction 29 at the forward edge of the lid H will engage the bottom 5 of a pan to 3g prevent any escape of the dirt from the pan. As can be seen in Figure 6, the side edge portions of the lid H are curved downwardly as at 30 to rest on the outstanding flange 3'I of the side walls 6 of the pan. 25
While the foregoing specification sets forth the invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape, size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as 3p, claimed hereinafter.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A dustpan comprising a pan bottom provided with a back wall and tapered side walls, said back wall having a rearwardly extending flange at the upper edge thereof, a handle extending rearwardly from the back wall, a cover for the bottom, a hinged connection between the cover and the flange, said hinged connection includ- 4O ing a plate provided with a pair of supplemental barrels, a lever constructed from wire and including a pair of leg members forming a handle portion, said leg members at their intermediate portions being laterally disposed and disposed through the supplemental barrels, said leg members beyond the barrels being bent upwardly and provided with eyes at their extremities, a U- shaped member swingably mounted on the top of the cover and provided with laterally disposed trunnions at its end portions disposed through the eyes of the aforementioned leg members.
