DUST-PAN.
master.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, rare.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVAH J. BUMP, zen of the United States, residing at Cambridge, in the county of Guernsey and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dust pans and the principal object of the invention is to provide a dust pan which has a handle and a dust retainer so that when inone position it may a citibe used to sweep the dust into and when in may be used as a conanother position it trash and dust to a suitveyer for carrying able receptacle.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide a dust pan in which the handle is held in various positions. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a dust pan which is so constructed as to make a device which is exceedingly simple in construction and is strong and durable.
A further and more specific object of the invention is to provide a reinforcing member for holding the two sections of the dust pan together and also for providing the pivot plates in which the handle is pivotally mounted.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dust pan constructed in accordance with this invention illustrating the same as it would appear when in use. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the device in use as transporting the trash or dust gathered therein. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view on an enlarged scale through a portion of the device illustrating the handle locking plate, and Fig. 4c is a plan view of the blank on which the dust pan is constructed.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 designates the main body of the dust pan provided at one end with the forward extension 2. Formed integrally with the opposite end of the body 1 is the back or bottom wall 3 which has formed integral there:
,juring persons with the top or front wall 4. The body 1 has formed integral therewith at opposite side edges a flange 5 provided at its outer edge with a connecting flange (3 which is adapted to cooperate with a similar connecting flange on the flange 7 which is formed integral with the side edge of the front wall at. The above mentioned'flange is designated by the numeral 8 and its function will be described in detail in the following. Formed integral with the side edges of the extension 2 are the side flanges 9 which oin the flanges 5 as clearly illustrated in the drawings. A suitable flange 10 is formed integral with each end of the bottom or back wall 8 and is adapted to be bent upwardly when the device is in its upper position as shown in the drawings.
In the assembling of the device it will be noted that the back 3 is bent upwardly from the body 1 along the fold lines 11 while the top or front so as to extend parallel to the body 1. The flanges 5 and 7 are then bent at right angles to their respectiv walls and the flanges 6 and 8 are connected so as to form the side walls of the device. The bending of the walls '5 will simultaneously bend the flanges 9 and thus form a structure as illustrated in Figs;
1 and 2. After the side walls are bent upwardly and inwardly the flanges 10 are then bent on the fold lines 13 so as to extend parallel to the side walls and their extreme outer edges are bent inwardly to form a smooth edge and prevent the possibility of a person becoming injured on the sharp edge of the metal. It will also be noted that the inwardly bent portions forming the smooth edge also engage suitable outwardly bent portions on the inner ends of the walls 9 and 7 thus forming a transversely extending reinforcement. In order that the forward edge of the wall 4 and the upper edges of the flanges 9 will be prevented from inguard flanges 14 which are bent as illustrated in the drawings so as to provide a smooth edge.
After assembling the device in the manner previously described the plates15 are secured in place by suitable rivets 16 and each of these plates comprises a body 17 having the side flanges 18 formed thereon and the foremost side flange is provided with a central notch 19, while the rear side flang is PIQV QQQ' With a pair of notches wall 4: is bent on the line 12' they are provided with the 20, the use of which will appear as the de designated by the numeral 22 and is provided at its lower end with a bail 28, the ends of the arms of which are bent inwardly as at 24 so as to extend through the aperture 21. and thereby pivotally connect the handle to the dust pan.
In use, it will be seen that the handle may be swung into the position shown in Fig. l or may be moved into thelower notch 20 and when in this position the dust pan will be in position for the user to sweep the dust thereinto. After having swept the trash and dust into the pan and it is ready for transportation it will be seen that the handle isv swung so as to engage in the notch 19 thereby locking the handle against further movement and causing the pan to be liftedinto the position shown in Fig. 2 when the handle is moved upwardly. 7
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understoodthat such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the wall formed integral with the back Wall and extending in a plane parallel to the body,
. side flanges formed on the body and front wall, connecting flanges at the outer edges of the side flanges, the said side flanges being bent at right angles to their respective walls and having their respective connecting flanges connected together, a centrally apertured pivot plate secured to the side flanges to hold their outer ends together and a bail pivoted to said pivot plate.
2. A dust pan comprising a body, a back wall formed integral. with said body, front walls formed integral with the back wall and extending'in a plane parallel to the body, side flanges formed on the body and front wall, connecting flanges formed at the outer edges of the side flanges, the side flanges being bent at right angles to their respective walls and having their connecting flanges con nected together to form side walls, pivot plates secured to the side walls and straddling the seams therein to provide reinforcements therefor, a bail pivoted to said pivot plates, a handle on the bail and notched flanges on the pivot plates to hold the bail. in various positions on the device. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two wltnesses.
