FERDINAND O. SPAULDING, OF FAIRFIELD, MAINE.
DUST-PAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 25. 1918.
Application filed February 23, 1917. Serial No. 150,509.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Fnnnimxnn O. S1 AULD- me, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairficld, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dust pans and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved utensil of this character that will be more eflicient than the ordinary dust pans now generally used and one which can be constructed from a single piece of material which may be folded for providing the necessary parts for performing the functions pertinent to the device;
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a receptacle for the dirt and dust swept upon the pan whereby accidental displacement of the contents of the receptacle will be prevented by its construction with respect to the angular disposition of the dust pan blade.
A further object of the invention is the provision of means for ejecting the contents of the receptacle in a manner that will permit the dirt and dust which comprises the contents to be concentrated at one point of ejection. so that spreading of the dirt and dust will be prevented.
Another objectof the invention resides in the provision of a thoroughly braced dust pan of this character that will possess the rigidity for the purpose of avoiding distortion of the blade without the use of additional braces or reinforcing members.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a dust pan which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a top plan.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the blank from which the pan is formed.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4M4 of Fig. it
Referring to the drawing, wherein .is
illustrated the preferred form ofmy invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and more particularly to Fig. 3 which illustrates the blank from which the pan is constructed it will be of the blade 3. The side edges of the main portion, are cut at right angles to the front edge of the blank. The blank is also provided with the slits at adjacent each side edge and it is to be noted that these slits, for the greater portion of their length, are substantially if-shaped. point about on the longitudinal center line of the blank of the main portion 1 and from these terminals the sides or marginal portions 5 are adapted to be bent, on the dot ted lines 6 for forming the side flanges? of the pan shown in the assembled views 1, 2 and a. The marginal edges of these flanges 7 are adapted to be rolled and braced in a manner that will be hereinafter more fully described.
The main portion 1 of the blank is adapted to be folded on the dotted line 8 which indicates a straight line between the termiwhich communicate with the slits 4: and the blank is to be bent on the dotted line 12, indicating a straight line between the terminals of the slits 11, for forming the bottom 12 of the dirt receiving receptacle.
When thus folded the extension 10 forms the rear wall 13 of the receptacle. This rear wall 13 is disposed at an angle.
The marginal edge of the extension 10 is bent on the line indicated at 14:. to form theback wall 14 of the pan and the ends of this wall are overlapped by the tongues 15 formed on the terminals of the side ortions For forming these tongues the side por The slits terminate at a lines extending from the terminals of the slits ll to the terminals of the slits 4; and upon which the blank is bent to provide'the sides 18 of the receptacle. When thus bent, the corners of the extension 10 formed by the slits 4: and 11, can bevbent under the sides 18 to provide the attaching flanges 19 which areprovided with suitable openings adapted to register with the openings in the sides 18, for receiving a rivet thus holding these. portions of the pan tightly together. It is pointed out that these are the only two fastening elements used in the construction f th Pan- When the pan is folded as above deseribed, the marginal edges of the side portions 5 which comprise the flanges 7 of the pan andthe marginal edge of the extension 10 whichforms the back'portion of the pan, maybe rolled over a suitable binding rod 20 the terminals of which are placed at the for- .ward edge of the pan. A notch 21 is provided in the back 14 and at this point the binding rod or reinforcing wire 20 is twisted and extended rearwardly to provide the i llendl 22- In use, the pan will be held in the position shown by Fig. 4 and the dirt and dust may be swept up over the blade 3 and deposited in the receptacle embraced by the the panthefslit liS widened until the relatively large vopening 23 is provided between the marginal edge of each wall 18 and the ,adjacen-t wall of the flange 7. Now, when the panis slightly. tilted edgewise the dirt will be lodged'in the corner of the receptacle atpne end thereof and. may be dumped out of the receptacle through the opening 23. By; virtue of the size of the opening and the angular disposition of the corresponding wall 18, the dirt will be concentrated at this point so that it will not spread out and cover surrounding articles when the dirt is being Ylilrom the foregoing it will be observed thata very simpleand durable dust pan has been provided,;the details of which embody the -preferred form. I desire .it to be underqopiesef patent may be obtained for stood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
I claim:
1. A dust pan comprising afront blade and a receptacle carried at the rear thereof, the meeting portions of the said blade and the receptacle providing a ridge transversely across the pan, side flanges integrally connected to the blade and extending rearwardly and upwardly above the said receptacle at each end thereof whereby openings are provided at each end of the said receptacle, the rear wall. of the receptacle having its marginal edge rolled and contacting with the ends of the said flanges, the marginal edges of the said flanges also being rolled.
2. A dust pan comprising a front blade and a receptacle carried at the rear thereof, the meeting portions of the said blade and the receptacle providing a ridge transversely across the pan, side flanges integrally connected to the blade and extending rearwardly and upwardly above the said receptacle at each end thereof whereby openings are provided at each end of the said receptacle, the rear wall of the receptacle having its marginal edge rolled and contacting with the ends of the said flanges, the marginal edges of the said flanges also being rolled, and a brace wire received by the said rolled edges of the flanges and the said wall.
3. A dust pan comprising a front blade and a receptacle carried at the rear thereof, the meeting portions of the said blade and the receptacle providing a ridge transversely across the pan, side flanges integrally connected to the blade and extending rearwardly and upwardly above the said receptacle at each end thereof whereby openings are provided at each end of the said receptacle, the rear wall of the receptacle having its marginal edge rolled and contacting with the ends of the said flanges, the marginal edges of the said flanges also being rolled. a brace wi re received by the said rolled edges of the flanges and the said wall, the margin of the said rear wall being notched whereby the said Wire may be twisted, and a handle projecting rearwardly from the said notch. In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
