DUST-PAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 13, 1914.
Application filed May 22, 1912. Serial No. 698,942.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BEEGHER, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust- Ians, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to dustpans of the class which have a reinforcement of the front edge over which dirt or dust is swept and has to do particularly with the means whereby the reinforcement is secured in place.
It is well known that the thin material of which dust pans are ordinarily made will not, in use, preserve the straight fiat edge necessary for good work, and to correct this fault, reinforcements have been applied by various more or less clumsy and expensive means, such as soldering, folding over and clamping, passing lugs of the reinforcement through the blade of the dust pan etc.
My invention provides an effectively reinforced dust pan which may be quickly and easily made'by slipping the reinforcement under the folded edge of the dust pan and curling or beading the projecting ends of the reinforcement in with the beaded or wired sides of the dust pan, as they are commonly made. This provides a certain and secure attachment of the reinforcement, which is preferably made of fiat sheet steel, but may be of some other material.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust pan embodying my invention, part of the front edge being broken away to show the location of the reinforcing strip. Fig. is a cross section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, illustrating the man nor in which the ends of the strip are incorporated in the beaded edges of the sides, and Fig. 3 is a bottom View showing only the part of the pan adjacent its front edge.
In the drawings just described the dust pan is provided with the body 1., the sides 2, the back 3 and the handle at secured in any suitable manner. The front edge of the pan is returned on itself on the under side of the pan forming the fold 5 into which is inserted the stiffening strip 6 whose ends 7 are bent into the plane of the angular sides 2 of the pan and are incorporated with the beaded or wired upper edges of said sides.
In order to strengthen dust pans it is a common practice to bead over the edges and still greater strength may be secured by beading them over on a reinforcing wire. In the dust pan illustrated herein a continuous reinforcing wire 8 running around the dust pan at its upper edge is employed. The ends 7 of the stiffening strip are beaded over the said wire 8 as indicated at 9 and the upper edge of each side is headed over the wire and the ends of the stiffening strip as indicated at 10. The ends of the stiffening strip and the upper edges of the sides are most conveniently headed over simultane ously so that the reinforcement may be socured in place inexpensively and expeditiously. The fold 5, of course, aids in keeping the reinforcing strip in place, since it is made to grip the said strip firmly.
It will be apparent that a reinforcing bead may be employed with or without a reinforcing wire and that where such a wire is employed it might stop short of the points at which the ends of the stiffening strip are secured by beading.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A dust pan having its front edge returned on itself on the under side of the pan to form a fold and having angular sides provided with beaded edges, and a stiffening strip secured in the said fold and having its ends firmly beaded in with the edges of the sides into a permanent rigid fastening;
2. A dust pan having its front edge returned on itself on the under side of the pan to form a fold, angular sides, a stiffening strip secured. in, said fold, and a continuous reinforcing wire over which the ends of said stiffening strip and said sides are firmly headed into a permanent rigid fastening said sides being headed over outside said ends.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
7 JOHN BEECHER.
