To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. C. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Coat-Hangers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

The present invention relates to a coat hanger, and is embodied in a hanger of that type in which the supporting part consists of bent wires, there being two members connected together to slide one on the other, so that the hanger can be extended for use, or folded to a more convenient size, when not in use.

The invention is embodied in a novel construction and arrangement which is inexpensive and durable as well as exceptionally strong.

In accordance with the invention, the two members of th hanger, which consist of U-shaped wires longitudinally movable with relation to each other, are connected together by means of bent and flattened fasteners of sheet metal each of which is permanently attached to the wires at the open end of one of the members, and provided with guide sleeves in which the other member is capable of sliding.

The invention also relates to novel means for constructing and securing the fasteners. The fasteners also constitute stops to limit the extending movement of the members, as well as means for positioning and retaining the suspending hook which is attached to a ring, the said ring surround one leg of each U-shaped member, and being kept in the middle of the hanger by the fasteners, when the hanger is in its extended position ready for use.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a coat hanger embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the middle of the hanger when extended.

Referring to Fig. 1, the two supporting members of the hanger consist of the U shaped wires 1 and 2, the leg 1 of the memher 1 extending between the legs 2 and 2", of the member 2, while the leg 1 lies outside of the member 2. firmly secured together in any position and at the same time be capable of a relative longitudinal movement, each member is provided at the end with a fastener; the two fasteners being indicated respectively by the reference numerals 3 and l. These fasteners are composed of strips of sheet metal which are bent over and flattened in the shape shown, the ends of the strips being riveted together in the middle, and each fastener having sleeves surrounding the wires of the other supporting member which is adapted to slide therein.

In order to secure the fasteners to the ends of the U-shaped members, the ends of the wires of each member are provided with bent or offset portions 10 and 20 as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3; and when the fasteners are bent over and stamped, the opposite sides of the fasteners are flattened and forced together between the bent portions 10 and 20 and the sleeves which surround the straight portions of the other member. The same stamping process forms the sleeves which surround the wires of the other member, so that the said other member is free to slide endwise through said sleeves while the member to which the fastener is connected is Securely clamped without any extra fastening device.

Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, the fastening device 4 which is connected with the member 2 is first folded or bent over the two members after the members have been placed in the proper position, with the ring 5 surrounding the wires 1 and 2, and the device is then completed by means of a press which is adapted to force the sides of the fastening device together, the shape of the pressing member being such that the ends and the middle portion of the fastening device overlap as shown in Fig. 2, while the other parts are shaped to cover and fit over the wires of the members 1 and 2. This forms the sleeves 6 and 7 which fit over the unbent portion of one member and the pockets 8 and 9 which contain the bent ends of the other member, the said pocket being completed by the angular depressions 12 and 13 which in conjunction with the bent portions hold the fastener firmly in place with relation to the member to which it is connected. The fastener is completed by means of the rivet 14 which extends through the overlapping parts at the. middle of the fastener as clearly shown in Fig. 2. As indicated at IQ and 22 the edges of the Wires Where the fasteners are bent over them.

\Vhat I claimis:

' A coat hanger comprising tWo U-shaped members connected together to slide longitudinally side by side, one leg of each member lying between the legs of the other member, and the'legs of each member being bent at the ends; and fasteners consisting of strips of sheet metal folded over the four legs of the two U-shaped members, and overlapping at the middle, the folded over ends 15 In testimony whereof, I have signed my 20 name to this specification.
