Description

July 14, 1925. 1,546,228
w. J. GRAY PENCIL HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR BOOKS Filed'Feb, 11, 1925 ATTORNEY wrrusss:
Patented July 14, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM J. GRAY, OF EAST FLORENCE, ALABAMA.
PENCIL-HOLDING ATTACHMENT FOR BOOKS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLiAM J. GnAr, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Florence, lVilson Dam, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holding Attachments for Books, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attaching means for pencils whereby the same may be clamped over the cover of the book or engage a plurality of pages in order that the same may be firmly engaged therewith in order to hold the pencil thereto.
Another object of the invention is to pro vide such an attachment which owing to its simple and novel construction may be easily stamped out of sheets of metal and consequently sold at a very nominal cost owing to the fact that the same may be termed a punch press job.
A further object of the invention is to provide such an attaching means which may be made all in one piece and which owing to such configuration may be very attractive without directly departing from the spirit of the invention.
W'ith the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illus trated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective of a book showing the invention engaged therewith and holding a. pencil therein.
Figure 2 is a detailed perspective of the preferred form of the invention.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of a modification of the invention constructed of a single piece of material.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character indicates a book to which the present invention for purposes of illustration is applied. Referring to Figure 2 of the drawing, wherein a perspective is clearly illustrated of the preferred form there is included a pair of companion members 11 and 12 which have their major portion extending spaced parallel relation and having se- Application filed February 11, 1925.
cured to the corresponding ends thereof a pair of ball members 13. The opposite portions of the spaced parallel legs 11 and 12 are inwardly bent upon themselves at 1 1 and. and having such portions welded or otherwise soldered in order that the same may be held firmly together; the inwardly offset bent portions 14 and 15 of the spaced parallel legs 11 and 12 respectively extend upwardly and downwardly in order to provide a pair of superimposed arcuate shaped members 16 and 17 respectively which have their outer end portions terminating in oppositely extending flange members 18.
In Figure 3 of the drawing wherein a top plan is shown of a modified form of the invention which is constructed of a single piece of material and which includes a split ring 11 which has its split portions terminating in flange members 18 as is common in the preferred form. Extending in diametrically opposed relation to the flange members 18 is a pair of integrally formed legs 11 and 12 which carry on the outer end portions thereof a pair of ball members 13 as used in the preferred form.
In the use and operation of the present invention as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawing that the cover of a book such as indicated at 10 may be accon'nnodated or received between the spaced parallel legs 11 and 12 of either form of the invention shown in Figures 2 and 3 and that when and after the book cover or a plurality of leaves of the book have been inserted therebetween it will be clearly noted and understood that the ball members 13 will firmly engage the book cover and be held firmly thereagainst owing to the resiliency and spring tensio-ning of the legs 11 and 12 thereon. The opposite end portions of either the preferred or modified form include either a pair of arcuate shaped members 16 and 17 or a split ring 11 which owing to the fact that each of them include a pair of outwardly flared flange members 18 they are adapted to receive a pencil therebetween and held within the space defined between the arcuate shaped members 16 and 17 or the ring 11. I
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, pro-portions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly Serial No. 8,519. TE
fall Within the scope of the appended claim. Having thus described my invention What is claimed is V A pencil holding attachment of: the character described comprising a split ring having flange members extending in opposite directions from the split portions thereof, a
pair of companion spaced parallel leg; mem:
bers extending in diametrically opposed relation from the ring with respect to split 10 portions thereof, and a pair of ball members sec-uredto the outer free end portions of the leg members for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature XVILLIAM J. GRAY
