CLIP FOR SPECTACLE CASES Filed Dec. 2, 1939 In ventor A iior neys Patented May 21, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT oFricE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to clips or clasps and more particularly to a clip or clasp particularly designed for use on a spectacle case, or cases for pencils, pens, and similar articles, and as are commonly carried in the breast pocket of garments.
An object of the present invention is to provide a clip or clasp of this character which is extremely simple in construction and at the same time is well-adapted for the purpose intended.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood. from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein: I
Figure 1 is an elevational view of a spectacle case having the clasp mounted thereon.
Figure 2 is a side edge view thereof with the clasp shown in open position.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary top edge view of the case with the clasp thereon, and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side edge view of the case with the clasp mounted thereon, and with the clasp shown in closed condition and with certain parts thereof broken away and shown in section.
Referring more in detail to the drawing it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment thereof the clasp indicated generally by the reference numeral 5 is formed from a single blank of spring metal or other suitable material cut, shaped and dimensioned to provide a combination attaching plate and fixed jaw B, and a movable complemental jaw I.
In forming the jaws 6 and l the plate is bent into a substantial U with the bight 8 acting as a spring tending 'to yieldably urge the jaw l away from the jaw 6.
Also the end portion of the plate from which the clasp is made, and constituting the jaw I, is laterally reduced for obvious utilitarian and design purposes.
In mounting the clasp 5 on the case 9, which latter may be, and as shown in the drawing, a spectacle case, the combination fixed jaw and attaching plate 6 of the clasp is disposed against one 45 side wall, preferably the rear fiat wall of the case 9 and is riveted or otherwise secured thereto through the medium of fastening elements [0.
Also anchored to the combination attaching plate and jaw 6 of the clasp and extending therefrom is a substantially U-shaped member I l the legs of which are accommodated by apertures I2 provided therefor in the jaw I of the clasp. v
Pivotally or rotatably mounted on the member i l at the closed end of the latter is a locking cam it that is provided with a suitable integral finger piece or handle M.
Also, to increase the eficctiveness oi the clasp the jaw l at the free end or edge thereof is bent 5 inwardly to provide an inwardly directed angular gripping lip or edge It.
In using the device it will be apparent that when the cam I3 is swung to the position shown in Figure 2, jaw 'i will swing outwardly from the 10 jaw 6 so as to accommodate between the jaws the edge of a pocket of a garment. With the edge so accommodated between the jaws the cam E3, in an obvious manner, is rotated in a clockwise direction thus causing the jaw l to move inwardly 15 towards the jaw 6 so that the edge 55 thereof will serve to effectively clamp between said edge l5 and the jaw 6 of the clasp the wall of the garment pocket thereby securing the case within such pocket against casual displacement and 20 possible loss.
Also in accordance with the present invention the clasp 5 is provided at the web or bight 8 thereof withan aperture 4 for accommodating a chain, such as a Watch chain or the like, to the 25 end that the fastener may be used, as for example, for securing one end of such chainin the pocket, for example, of a mans vest; or for any other use as may be found desirable in addition to the use of the clasp on spectacle cases, and the 30 i like as hereinabove described in detail.
It is thought that a clear understanding of the construction, utility and advantages of a clasp embodying the features of the present invention will be had without a more detailed description 5 thereof.
Having, thus described the invention what is claimed as new is:
A clasp of the class described comprising a substantially U-shaped member formed of flat material to provide fiat limbs of considerable width, one limb having a pair of holes therein intermediate its ends, a U-shaped member having its limbs passing through said holes with the ends of its limbs fastened in the other limb of the first U-shaped member, a cam having an eccentrically arranged hole therein throughwhich passes the bight of the second U-shaped member,
a handle on the cam, said cam when in a certain position engaging the limb of the first member which has the hole therein for pressing said limb toward the other limb of the first member and the bight of the first member having a chain receiving hole therein.
