CARL E. ANDERSON, OF EAST ORANGE, AND CARL E. PETERSON, OF UPPER MON TCLAIR,
TOOL & MFG. 00., OF BLOOMFIELD; NEW
NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNORS TO EASTERN JERSEY CLIP Application filed May 6, 1931. Serial No. 535,310.
This invention relates to an improved clip to be used on the edges of sheets or straps of material. The article is applicable for use as a paper clip and also as a clip for use on apparel such as on the slides of straps on garments such as overalls.
The object of the invention is to provide a clip that is permanently secured in place as the open clip when it has received the article to be fastened and has been compressed or punched to closed position has its fastening prongs inaccessible. The prongs are so engaged by the opposite side of the clip to prevent separation of the walls or jaws of the clip and hold the clip together and also hold the gripped sheet or sheets against withdrawal.
The clip of extremely simple construction is of the type that can be cheaply manufacple as it is only necessary to insert the element to be held and then firmly compress or close the clip in place.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a face view of a clip as applied to a slide for garments. Figure 2 is a section on line 22 in Figure 1. Figure 3 is a section of the clip alone in open position.
Figure 4: is a face view of a clip of modified form. Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 in Figure 4. Figure 6 is a section of the same clip secured to the end of a strap. Figure 7 is a section of a still further modified form with a strap secured in it. Figure 8 is a section of the clip shown in Figure 7 in open position.
I have elected to show the clip applied to through a slide 11 of conventional type. The
tured. In addition, its manner of use is sim' the end of a strap 10 which is threaded allow the use oflthe slide and clip as a unitary device for easy manipulation in the stamping or closing press.
The opposed jaws have co-acting means for holding the strap 10 in the clip and to hold the clip against opening.
In Figures 1, 2 and 3 I show the wall 15 as punched to form a prong or prongs, 17. The opposite wall is provided with a recess 18 formed by bending back the wall 15 to form a a second short wall 19. This wall 19 has a hole or holes 20 to receive the prong or prongs 17. The prongs are positioned to pass through the holes and are preferably curved or bent to facilitate their being bent easily when pressed against the wall 15 as shown in Figure 2. The open clip, as in Figure 3, is readily placed over the end of the strap 10 and then the clip is compressed or closed. The prongs catch under the wall 19 and hold the walls 14:
the prongs 21 bent toward the free end of the wall 15 and having the wall 19 imperforate but with its edge below the end of the prong to allow the prong to clear it. When the clip is compressed as in Figure 6 the prong is caught between the wall 19 and the wall 15 in the recess 18 to hold the strap 10 or its equivalent and to hold the walls of the clip against any separation.
In Figures 7 and 8, I show a clip in which the wall 1 1 has a close return bend 22 and an 7 open return bend 23 to form the recess 24-.
The return bend 22 forms a stifi retaining wall for the prong 17 of the wall 15. The prong clears the end of the bend 22 and is seated in the recess 24 when the clip is compressed as shown in Figure 7.
These clips are adapted for use in many other directions than the one illustrated and we desire to protect the clip as an article of manufacture adapted for many and various uses.
We claim:
A clip for garment slide, comprising a sheet of metal bent into a return bend to form opposed flat Walls of greater Width than length one of said Walls being bent again at its end to form a flat inner wall spacedfrom the Wall from which it is bent, the said flat spaced Wall having spaced openings eXtend ing across its Width, and spaced prongs extending inwardly from the opposed Wall and arranged to pass through the openings and lie between the flat Walls of the double Wall when the clip is compressed.
In testimony whereof they affix their signatures.
