HANDLE.
To aZZ whom it mag; o cern Be it known that LALBERT L. ADAMS, a citizen' of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Handle, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to handles, and aims to provide a novel and imroved hand hold or grip for the handles of shovels and other tools.
It is the obj ect of the invention to provide a handle which will be substantial in construction, so as to withstand and resistthe strains to which it is subjected, and which will be thoroughly efiicient and practical in use.
Another Object of the invention is the provision of a hand hold or grip which is adjust-able and adaptable to various sizes of handles, within practical limits.
A still further Object of the invention is the provision of a hand hold or grip embodying a unique assemblage of the component parts, whereby the construction will be comparatively simple and inexpensive, as well as being convenient, serviceable, and effective in use.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of the device, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken on the line 4-4- of Fig. 1.
The present device, which is in the form of a hand hold or grip attachable to the end of the handle of a shovel or other tool, embodies an arcuate or U-shaped member l, preferably formed from channel iron constituting the web 2 and outturned flanges 3. Thus the web or flange 2 of the channel member 1 is disposed innermost, and the fianges 3 project outwardly and serve to reinforce the structure.

Application filed March 24, 1915. Serial No. 16,732.
A wooden piece or member 4 of circular cross section, and 'formed to be conveniently grasped within the hand, is disposed between the ends of the member l, and is secured to the member 1 by means of a rod 5 extended longitudinally through the member et and terminally riveted through the ends of the web or back 2 of the channel member 1, as at 6. The members 1 and 4 provide a D-shaped hand-receiving element, which is adapted to be secured to the handle by means of a securing member or element 7. This securng member 7 is bent from .a strip of suitable sheet metal, which is also true of the channel member 1, and the member or strip 7 is doubled and bent to provide the leaves 8 of arcuate cross section and cooperating to provide a handle receiving socket. The leaves 8 are arranged at the opposite sides of the hand hold or grip, and the divisions' or slots between the leaves 8 are arranged in the plane of the members 1 and 4: or in the plane of the hand hold, whereby the leaves 8 may swing sidewise for adjusting themselves to various sizes of handles. The bend portion 9 of the member 7 passes around and embraces the intermediate portion of the member 1, and the bend or intermediate portion 9 of the member 7 is riveted upon the intermediate portion of the member 1 by means of a rivet or securing element 10.
The bend or internediate portion 9 of the member 7 Projects beyond the side edges of the leaves 8, due to the transverse curvature of the leaves 8, and the protruding portions 12 of the intermediate or bend portion 9 of the member 7 tightly embrace the member 1, and are provided with portions 13 engaging under and around the edges of the fianges 3, to assist the rivet 10 in securely attaching the members l and 7 together, whereby they are not liable to bend or become displaced relative to one another even though the device is subjected to Severe strains.
The leaves 8 are fleXible and adapted to be swung to and from each other, and each leaf is provided with a pair or plurality of apertures 11, the apertures of the two leaves being in alinement. The leaves S are adapted to be slipped over the end of the wooden or other handle 14- of a shovel or other tool, and the member 7 may then be secured to the handle by means of rivets or other securing elements 15 engaged through the handle and the apertures 11 of the leaves 8, to clamp the leaves against the handle, or to clamp the handle within the socket formed bv the leaves. The leaves 8 being flexible may be secured to the handles of various sizes within practical limits, which is a desirable feature. The present hand hold or grip will be thoroughly rigid in construction, and will not be liable to become loos ened during the use thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A hand hold comprising a hand receiving member embodying a channel member, and a doubled handle engaging member having its intermediate portion secured to the back of the channel member, and the intermediate portion of the second nientioned member having portions engaged arou rd the edges of the flanges of the channel member.
2. A hand hold comprising' a U-shaped the ends of the said member, and a doubled handle engaging strip having its bend portion extending around and securecl to the back of the channel member, the strip forming handle engaging leaves, and the leaves being of arcuate cross section, the bend portion of the strip having protruding portions and the protruding portions'having portions engaged around the edges of the flanges oI" the channel member.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT L. ADAMS.
