SCRUBBING-BRUSH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,436, dated June 16, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLTAM R. HooK, of Oat-asauqua, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scrubbing- Brushes, andI do hereby declare that the following` is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accoml panying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved scrubbing-brush. Fig. 2 is a sectional view ofthe same on the line marked, fle-a', and Fig. 3 is a detail View of the two parts of the hinge-clamp separated from each other.

My invention has relation to mops or scrubbing-brushes for cleansing the floors ofdwellings, Src.; and 1t consists in the improved construction of the same, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, A denotes the body or back piece of the brush, (shown at B). Upon this is fastened by screws G two castings, which, when put together, form a bearing or a ball socket for the handle D, the lower end of which is inserted into a socket, E, which is cast with a sphere or ball, F, at its lower end. This ball lits with its sides into the hollow cheeks G G, which are cast with plates H, having arms I, the outer ends of which are slotted at t' for the insertion of the screws C, by means of which the blades or castings H are fastened to the body of the brush.

The socket E, with its ball F, is free to move in the slot J, formed between the cheeks GG, and if through Wear the play of the ball becomes too great, so as to make Vthe brush too loose at the end of its handle, this may readily be remedied by loosening the screws of one or both of the half parts or plates H, andmoving it or them closer up against the ball, after which it is again fastened to the body A of the brush. The straight guide edges g of the recessed cheeks G prevent the handle from working out of its plane in the direction ot' the slot or opening between the cheeks, but at the same time permits the handle to turn readily in its bearing without chaing the hands of the person using the brush.

I am well aware that a so called universal joint or ballvjoint is not new, the same being used for a variety of' purposes; but I am not aware that a hinge of this class has been made before of the speciic construction and for the 6o purpose stated by me in the foregoing speciiication,whe1eby wear may be easily compensa-ted for, while at the same time, by the peculiar construction ofthe plates H, with their radial slotted arms I, the device operates to strengthen the back part or body ot' the brush by forming diagonal braces for the sa-me.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a scrubbing-brush, the combination of the brush A B, plates or castings H, having recessed cheeks G, and slotted diverging arms l, and handle-socket E, having a ball, F, at
