Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: I
' Be it known that I, JOSEPH ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Alvo, in the county of Cass and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and Improved Flue-Stop, of which the following is a rull clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to flue stoppers, and has for an object to provide a flue stop for securing a flue cap to a flue hole, to prevent any dust, smoke, or soot from passing through the flue hole into a room. For the purpose mentioned, use is made of pivotally connected bars having lateral flanges thereon and adapted to be removably engaged by a holding screw connected with a flue cap.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of a fine disclosing my flue stop applied thereto, the section being taken 011 the line 1-1 of Fig. 3; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing my device in a folded position; and Fig. 3 is a View looking directly into the rear end of a flue and showing my flue stop arranged therein.
Referring to the figures, I employ bars 10 and 11, the bar 10 being slightly larger than the bar 11. These bars have straight portions 13 and 14 and integral parts 15 and 16 having a slightly curved surface. Flanges 17 and 18 are secured integrally on the parts 15 and 16, and project laterally thereof. The bars 10 and 11 are pivotally connected by a pivot rod 19. Lugs 20 and 21 are provided respectively on the parts 13 and 14, and suitable holes are provided therein. Use is made of a holding screw 22 having a knob 23 and a screw threaded portion 24.
In the operation of my flue stop, the bars 10 and 11 are disposed in a flue 25 so that the parts 15 and 16 engage the sides of the flue, with the flanges 17 and 18 extending away from the flue and against the outer wall of the same, it being understood that the bars 10 and 11 are so disposed relative to each other that the holes in the lugs 20 and 21 will register. A flue cap 26 is disposed over the opening in the flue and the screw 22 is provided to screw threadedly engage the flue cap by passing the screw through a hole in a lug 27 on the flue cap. The screw 22 is then adapted to successively and screw threadedly engage the lugs 20 and 21 by passing the screw through the holes in the lugs. Thus it will be seen that as the screw is tightened, the flue cap is drawn toward the flue stop and the said cap is held securely against the flue to close the opening therein. To remove the flue cap and flue stop, the screw is disengaged from the flue stop and the cap can then be removed. Owing to the pivoted connection between the bars 10 and 11 being oflset from the central plane of the flue and flue stop, the bar 11 can be pivoted on the bar 10 to swing thereon so that the bar 11 will take the position shown in Fig. 2 and thus it will be seen that the flue stop can be easily removed from the flue.
Although I have shown a particular construction for the purpose of describing my device, it will be understood that the scope of my invention is defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the class described, comprising a flue cap provided with a central opening, a pair of bars, each provided with a straight portion which extends at substantially a right angle from one end of the said bars, the other end of the bars being each provided with a flange adapted to engage a wall adjacent the flue, the said straight portions being pivotally connected together and each provided with a threaded opening lying in the plane of the opening in the said flue cap, together with a fastening means engaging the said openings.
