Be it known that I, ALBERT Il. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to improvements in handles, and more particularly to that type of handle known as the D-handle for use upon shovel, fork, spade and the like helves, one object of the invention being the pro vision of a handle of this type, which is simple, durable and inexpensive to manufacture, and which is thoroughly efficient and practical in use.

A further object of this invention is provision of a handle that has in addition to all of the advantages of the handle set forth in my U. S. Letters Patent No. 1,168,267, granted to me January 18th, 1916, the further advantages that the channel member fits into grooves in the end of the helve, and that such channel member is further provided with housing flanges for the ends of the hand-grip, which are important features for this type of handle.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of the handle, the hand-grip part and adjacent portion being broken away.

Referring to the drawings, the numeral 6 designates the helve of the implement, while the handle consists of the U-shaped channel member 7, having the flanges 8 exteriorly thereof, bent adjacent their terminals as at 9, to coperate with the body of the member 7 to provide the rim or housing 10 for the respective ends of the hand-grip 11, which is held in place by the rivet pin 12.

Fitting astride of the member 7 is the helve engaging resilient member 13, the same being attached rigidly to the member 7 by the rivet 14. This member 13 is pro- Spccifcation of Letters Patent.

vided with two leaves or terminals 15, are cuate in cross-section, which llt upon the end of the helve and are secured rigidly thereto by the rivets 16. The portions of the leaves as at 17 are bent or crimped inwardly to engage the flanges 8 so that the two

members

7 and 18 are more securely attached together.

The upper end of the helve 6 is provided with two tranversely disposed and parallel grooves 18 which when the handle is seated thereon receives the flanges 8 of the member 7 as shown in Fig. 2, thus permitting the handle to fit more closely upon the helve, and providing means for assisting in holding the handle from turning, and also as a means to center the. handle when primarily attaching the same.

From the foregoing description, it is evident that a D-handle of superior construction is provided, and one which is easily attached firmly Ato the `handle' of the implement, thus providing a device of this type, which is thoroughly efficient and practical 1n use.

As shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the hand-grip 11', is provided with a slot 19 in each end so that the upper terminal of the U-shaped channel member 7 may lit and be housed 85 therein, the edges of the two being rounded so that no objectionable sharp edges are produced.

It is also possible to employ deeper grooves 18 and longer flanges 8, so that the 90 entering of the flanges in the grooves will tend to spread the handle to more firmly secure the handle in the portions 15.

What I claim, as new, is

1. A hand hold including a U-shaped channel member, the flanges of which are upon the exterior and the upper ends of which flanges are inturned to form a housing, a hand-grip having its ends seated in said housings, and means for attaching the member to a handle.

2. A hand hold including a U-shaped channel member, the flanges of which are upon the exterior and the upper ends of which flanges are inturned to form a housing, said ends being each provided with an aperture, a hand-grip having its ends seated in the housings, a riveting rod piercing the hand-grip and openings, and means attached to the member for securing it to a handle.

3. The combination with a handle having two grooves in the end thereof, of a handhold, including a handle embracing member having tivo resilient terminals and a lconnecting portion, a U-shaped channel member attached to the handle embracing member and having the'flanges thereof eX- tending outwardly, the anges adjacent to the handle being seated in the grooves, and

' means for securing the handle embracing member upon the handle and holding the lianges so seated.

5V. The combination .with a handle having Y a groove in the end thereof, of a hand-hold YVincluding a member having two resilient handle embracing terminals, a U-shaped memberattached to the connecting portion ofthefirst member, a flange carried thereby for fitting in the groove of the handle, and

means for securing the terminals of the first member to the handle and for seating the flange in the groove.

6. The combination with a handle having a plurality of grooves in the end thereof, of a hand-hold having an attaching member for embracing the end of the handle,

and a U-shaped member having a plurality of flanges and so formed that the flanges will seat in the grooves when the handle and hand-hold are attached.

7 The combination with a handle having a groove transversely of the end thereof, of a hand-hold having an attaching member to embrace the end of the handle, and a U- shaped member having a wedge for entering the groove of the handle to spread the material of the handle and to also hold the handle from rotating independently of the handle.
