MOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1914.
Patented Oct. 6, 1914:;
Serial No. 841,720.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. VVALLAOE, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops, of which the following is a 1 in theend portion of the mop stick, said specification.
T his invention relates to mop holders, and I has for its object to provide a holder having a crotch or a plurality of crotches, or the like, into which mop material is retained by binding means which, also, secures the mop head upon the end of the mop. stick, the
novelty of the present invention residing in the provision of a mop holder which is formed so that the binding means will prevent rotary movement of the holder about the end of the mop stickand will hold. the ends of the holder securely in overlapped relation, thereby obviating the necessity and expense of riveting the ends of the holder together as has been heretofore customary.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, in which like numbers of reference denote like parts wherever they occur, Figure 1 is an elevation of a mop equipped with this improved head; Fig. 2 shows the mop cords in the position relative to the mop-head and to the end of the mop stick that they occupy while being bound or wired thereto and immediately after the binding operation has been completed; and Fig. 3 shows the mop-head in the position relative to the end. of the mop stick that it occupies and the arrangement of the means for binding the mop material in the head and, also, to the end of the stick.
The mop head 1 is preferably formed by stamping same from a piece of sheet-metal. In the particular edge of the head 1 that becomes the edge toward the handle of the mop stick 2 there is formed a pair of notches 3 adjacent to the ends, respectively, of the head and, also, a third notch 4 substantially midway between the notches 3 so that,when the ends of the head are brought together and overlapped to form the head into a cyl-- ably directly opposite the other notch 5,
said notches 5 and the outer edge of" the perforation being located at such distance from the end of the stick that said wire allows the end of the stick to protrude into the mop head preferably to a point at or adjacent to thebottom of each notch 5, as best seen in Fig. 8, leaving an open space 8 in the outer end of the mop head. A suitable quantity of mop material 9 is laid across the open space 8 and the notches 5, and the wire 6, after being passed through the perforation, 7, is drawn about the bunch of mop material 9 and its ends secured together by means of loops 10 in the usual manner, so as to bind the cords in the space 8 and notches 5 and, also, to hold the mop material and the mop head firmly upon the end of the mop stick. The wire 6passes through the notches 3 and 4 and thereby not only prevents the mop head from sliding farther on the mop stick, but, also, prevents rotary movement of the mop head on the mop stick. By
reason of the wire 6 passing through the notches 3 and interlocking with ends of the mop head, as hereinabove described, the ends of the mop head are thereby held securely in overlapped relation, and, by this arrangement, the necessity of securing the ends of the mop head together by rivets or the like as has been heretofore. customary is obviated.
It will be observed that the corner protuberances 11 adjacent to the notches 3 project slightly beyond the end edge of the mop head, and that the side edges of each notch 3 converge from the bottom of same, the purpose of this arrangement being to facilitate the operation of binding the mop head upon the end of the mop stick. By this arrangement, it is only necessary to bring the two ends of the mop head together and overlapped sufi iciently to allow the wire 6to enter between the inner edges 12 of the protuberances 11, whereupon the drawing of the wire tightly about themop material 9 to bind the latter in the, mop head, as hereinabove described, causes the mop head to move upwardly on the mop stick, whereby the wire 6 forces the converging inner edges 12 of the protuberances 11 farther apart and then seats in the bottoms of the notches 3, drawing the head closely about the mop stick, While at the same time the Wire, also, seats in the notch 4.
I claim:
1. In combination With a mop stick having a transverse aperture near one end thereof, a mop head formed of a strip of sheet metal having its ends brought together in overlapped relation so that the inner end of the'inop head encircles the apertured end of the mop stick, a pair of registering notches in the inner edge of the overlapped ends of said mop head, Which. notches communicate With one end of the aperture in the mop stick, mop material located in the outer end of sa-id'mop head, and a binding Wire passing through the aperture in the mop stick and the notches inthe inner edge of the mop read and adapted to retain the overlapped ends of said mop head in overlapped relation, to retain the mop material in said head, and to restrict the inward and, also, rotary movement of and to retain said head on said stick.
2. In combination With a mop stick hav ing a transverse aperture near one end thereof, a mop head formed of a strip of metal having its ends brought together in overmop stick, a pair of registering notches in the inner edge of the overlapped ends of said mop head, Which notches communicate With one end of the aperture in the mop stick, a third notch in the inner edge of said mop head opposite said registering notches and communicating With the other'end of the aperture in the mop stick, mop material located in the outer end of said mop head, and a binding wire passing through the aperture in the mop stick and all of said notches in the inner edge of said mop head and adapted to retain the overlapped ends of said mop head in overlapped relation, to retain the mop material in said head, and to restrict the inward and, also, rotary movement of and to retain said head on said stick.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses. HARRY B. WALLACE.
