UNITED STATES PATENT 0 FFIQE.
IRIIS T. BOOTI-IE, OF QUINCY, ILLINOIS.
PACKET-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 675,318, dated. May 28, 1901.
Application filed September 1, 1900. Serial No. 28,756. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IRUS T. BOOTHE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Quincy, county of Adams, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packet-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in packet-holders; and the object is to provide a convenient means for tying letters and mailparcels for transportation by the Post-Oflice Department; and it consists in a ring one side of which is round and at opposite points recessed or offset, in connection with a strap of leather or rawhide secured at one end to one of the recesses or offsets in the ring and adapted to be passed around the packet, through the ring, and extended at right angles across the round portion of the ring to pass around the edges of the packet and thence into the other recess or offset, Where the ring is provided with an eccentricallypivoted clamp adapted to fasten the strap in position. This clamp of course, while preferred, might be dispensed with and some equivalent means employed for fastening the strap, and while the ring itself, of substantially the form outlined, is preferred that also might be more or less changed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View showing my improved packet-holder in position holding a packet .of letters together. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail showing the ring, and Figs. 3 and 4 are sectional views taken at right angles to each other.
A represents the ring. This is preferably cast of suitable metal and rounded, as at 1, throughout approximatelyhalf of its circumference to give a smooth rounded bearing in its interior. At points extending at right angles to each other in the remaining portion of the ring ofisets 2 and 3, respectively, are formed. To the former ofiset, 2, the end of the leather or rawhide strap B is secured. The other offset, 3-, is preferably bent slightly outward to facilitate the insertion of the end of the strap, and in this offset the cylindrical clamp 4 is eccentrically pivoted, as at 5 5, where it is adapted to securely clamp and hold the strap. Stops 6 6, preferably one on each end of the clamp, limit its movements and also serve as handles to manipulate the clamp.
The cross-bars a, and b partition the ofisets 2 and 3, respectively, from the interior of the ring, and they not onlyin that way afford an unobstructed interior to the ring, but also increase its strength.
In operation the packet-holder is applied as shown in Fig. 1that is to say, the ring Ais placed about centrally of the packet and the strap extended around one end or side edge, as the case may be, around the oppositeside, then back through the ring, thence at right angles around the intermediate edge, across the back and forward into the offset 3, and then the clamp is forced down and the strap is securely held.
As previously suggested, it is evident that slight changes might be made in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
1. As an article of manufacture, a packetholder consisting of a ring having an offset therein, a clamp pivoted in this offset whereby the interior of the ring is left unobstructed, a strap, means for securing the strap to a side of the ring and the strap adapted to be crossed through the ring and secured by the clamp in the ofiset.
2. As an article of manufacture, a packetholder consisting of a ring having a pair of offsets therein, a strap secured to one offset and a clamp eccentrically pivoted in the other and provided with a stop to limit its movement and serve asa handle, said clamp adapted to secure the strap between it and the adjacent portion of the ring.
3. As an article of manufacture, a packetholder ring having an unobstructed interior and provided with two offsets in its side, cross-bars separating these offsets from the interior of the ring, and a clamp pivoted in one ofthe offsets.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IRUS T. BOOTHE.
