IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-HODS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,514, dated May 8, 1877 application filed September 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. POTWIN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook' and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Inprovements in Coal-Hods; and I dohereby declare the following to bc a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which the figure represents a vertical central section of a coal-110d embodying my said invention.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the coal-hod for which I obtained Letters Patent on the 27th day of June, 1876, No. 179,132; and to that end my invention consists in the combination, with the Wood bottom, of a sheet-metal lining; and, also, in providing the lower edge of the body with an inwardly-projecting flange adjusted to pass between the two parts of the bottom, as is hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawing, A'represents the body of the hod, which is made of any sheet metal ordinarily used for that purpose. B is the bottom of the hod, which is made in two parts, 0 and G, and connected together by screws or rivets a a, as shown and described in the aforesaid Letters Patent. The periphery of the part 0 is beveled inward at an angle corresponding with the taper of the body, and so as to fit closely against the wall of the body at its base, and the part 0 is beveled outward from the base of the body, as shown at d. The lower edge or base of the body is turned inward, forming a flange, j, which extends under the part 0, and between it and the part 0, which prevents the part 0 from being forced through the body by the weight of the material in the hod. D is a sheet-metal lining, which rests upon the upper surface of the part 0, and is secured thereon by having its edge turned or spun over the periphery of the said part 0, and so that the turned edge of the lining will wedge between the periphery of the part 0 andthe wall of the body, as shown at g. Y
The object of said lining is to prevent the bottom of. the hod, or the part 0 thereof, from being worn or burned by the material placed Within the hod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
' 1. In a coal-hod, the combination, with the bottom B, consisting of the parts 0 and O, of the sheet-metal lining D, having its edge turned over the periphery of the part 0, and compressed between the part O and the body of the hod by the screws or rivets uniting the parts 0 and O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In acoal-hod, the combination, with the bottom B, consisting of the parts G and G, of the body A, provided with the flange f, adjusted to fit between the parts 0 and 0, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
