UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LUOIUS A. SUNDERLAND, OF MADISON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MILK-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 150,204, dated April 558, 1874; application filed March 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUCIUS A. SUNDERLAND, of Madison, in the county of Lake and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Top Hoop for Milk-Cans, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to an improvement in milk-cans; and consists in the peculiar construction and application of the top hoop, whereby a neat, strong, and light finish is made to the top of the can.
To fully understand my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a view of a portion of the top of a can having my improved hoop attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the ends of the 1100p together, and the manner of fastening them. Fig. 3 is a detached view of the fastener.
A is a portion of the body of a can. Bis a hoop, made of a strip of iron, bent so as to form a half-round grooved hoop. This is done in a machine having two grooved and one beaded roller, between which the said strip of iron is passed. The two ends of said strip are secured together by a malleable casting, O, fitting inside of the groove, and has two lugs, (l d, on its rounded surface. These lugs are put through holes near the ends of the strip, and are headed down, thus riveting the ends together, forming a strong joint.
This hoop is placed on the outside of the top edge of the can A, a little below the edge of the tin, and the edge of the tin is formed over the top edge of the hoop and soldered to the hoop, as seen at a, Fig. l. The under edge of the hoop is also soldered to the can. This makes a light, strong, and neat and cheap finish to the top edge of the can.
Having described my invention, I claim A milk-can re-enforced by a concavo-com'ex hoop at its top, said hoop united by an interior dowel, G, and seated beneath the outward flange at the top of the vessel, substantially as shown and described. 4
L. A. SUNDERLAND.
