UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
PRESERVE-JAR FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,101, dated July 28, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, REUBEN B. BARD,a citi zen of the United States, residing at \Villiamstown, in the county of Gloucester, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preserve Jar Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l representsaside elevation of a preserve-jar fastening embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section thereof, the same being at a right angle to Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
My invention consists of a preserve-jar fastening formed of a neck-band, which is pro vided with lugs having inclined faces, and a yoke which is sprung over said lugs, thus firmly holding the cover in position, the fastening having fewer parts and being inexpensive an d easily operated.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a preserve-jar, and B the cover thereof, both of wellknown form. On thetop of the cover B is a recess or groove, G,whose bottom extends in a curved direction across the same and receives ayoke, D,which is formed of steel orot-her suitable metal, and consists of a right-lined or nearly right-lined top part, a, and side legs, I), the latter being bent toward each other and provided with slots c,for engagement with lugs E on the opposite sides of the neck-band F of thejar, the outer faces of said lugs being inclined.
When the cover is in position, the yoke is placed thereon in the groove G,andits legs are cover, and is seated in the groove 0, whereby I it is prevented from lateral displacement.
In order to open the jar,the legs of the yoke are forced outwardly, whereby they clear the lugs E, and the yoke no longer controls the cover, whereby the latter may be raised or removed, as is evident.
I am aware that it is not new to employ a slotted yoke and lugs as a fastening for preserve-jars, and such I do not broadly claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
- 1. A preserve-jar fastening consisting of a spring-yoke, D, having slotted legs I), collars F, having lugs E, with inclined upper faces, and coverB, having recess 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A preserve-jar fastening consisting of a cover having at top arecess, 0, formed with a curved bottom, ayoke, D, formed of a rightlined top part, a, and side legs, b,with slots 0, and the neck-band F, having inclined lugs E, said parts being combined and operating substantiall y as and for the purpose set forth.
REUBEN B. BARD.
