Description

(No Model.) I
J. L. & E. A. DE STEIGER.
FRUIT JAR. N0."340,428. Patented Apr. 20, 1886.
- WITNESSES 7113' ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH L. DE STEIGER AND EDWARD A. DE STEIGER, OF LA SALLE, ILL.
FRUIT-JAR.
I SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,428, dated April 20, 1885.
Application filed February .14, 1886. serial No. 193,052. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J OSEPH L. DE STEIGER and EDWARD A. DE STEIGER, citizens of the United States, residents of La Salle, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jars; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and shows a vertical section through the upper portion of a jar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective. Fig. 4 is also adetail, and is the cover of thejar, viewed on the top.
Ourinvention relates to fruitjarsdesigned to be made ofglass or other suitable material; and it consists in the construction and novel conr bination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a fruitjar provided with an encircling groove, B, a short distance below the shoulder of thcjar. At diametrically-opposite points in the outside of the jar vertical grooves G C are provided, and eX- tend upwardly from the encircling groove B to the top of the jar.
D is a wire fastening, the body D of which is bent in the form of a semicircle, and is provided at its ends with vertical integral arms E E, having inwardly-projecting short bends F at the upper ends. This wire fastening D is sprung to place on the jar, the body portion D of said fastening filling one-half of the encircling groove B, and the arms E E resting in the vertical grooves G O, the hook ends t of said arms E E projecting a short distance above the shoulder of the jar.
H designates the cover of the jar, which pass under the hook ends of the vertical arms E E and securely lock and hold the cover in place on the jar. By turning the cover in the reverse direction it may be readily removed as soon as the inclined flauges pass from beneath the hook ends of the vertical arms of the fastening-wire.
The wire fastening, when sprung into place upon thejar, remains permanently in one position.
Having described this invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. The combination, with a fruit-jar having the encircling groove below its shoulder and the vertical grooves extending from said encircling groove to the top of the jar, of the semicircular wire fastening with vertical end arms having inwardly-projecting hooks at their upper ends, and the jar-lid having the inclined peripheral flanges, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with ajar having diametrically-opposite vertical external grooves below its shoulder, of the semicircular wire fastening with vertical hook-arms at its ends, and the cover with the inclined peripheral flanges, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of three witnesses.
