UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS W. BROWN, OF BELMONT, MASSACHUSETTS.
OPEN CAP FOR BOTTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,740, dated July 26, 1881.
' Application filed April 8,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BROWN, of Belmont, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented anew and useful Improved Open Gap for Bottles, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of bottles, &c., which have open caps-that is, such caps as will allow the contents of the bottle or other vessel, when in a granulated or powdered form, to be shaken out, and thus distributed evenly, as may be desired; and it consists in combining with the mouth of a bottle or other containing-vessel ahelix spiral wire cap, the wire being so wound that it will allow of the passage of any granulated or powdered substance through the interstices between the several coils of the wire.
In the drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my invention, showing the helix spiral cap applied to a bottle. Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showin gone method of forming the cap. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the cap, showing an addition of a central member, which extends downward into the bottle.
This device is intended as a cap or cover for any box, bottle, or other device for holding granulated orpowdered material which is to be shaken out for use-as for instance, salt, pepper, mustard, bluing, insect-powder, 850., and
is made of different shapes, dimensions, size of wire, width of interstices, &c., to adapt it for the use intended.
The drawings exhibit my invention as applied to a salt or pepper box or bottle, which in this case hasascrew-thread formed on its neck.
The cap B is formed of any suitable wire coiled to form acap-shaped spiral, terminating in a helix, the wire beingso loosely wound as to leave interstices between each coil.
In Fig. 3, I have shown a modification of my device,in which I have added to the cap adownweirdly-projecting member 0, D, which consists in a straight part, G, and the helix D, as shown. This part descends into the bottle and serves to prevent the contents from clogging.
It desirable, that part of the cap that is immediately over the mouth of the bottle may be coned or concaved, so as to form a sinkage at the mouth, instead ofa raised surface, as shown in the drawings.
The wire is round, flat, or square in sections, as may be desired.
I claim- 1. The cap B, made of wire coiled to the shape desired, whereby an open cap is formed, substantially asdescribed, and for the purpose set forth.
i 2. The cap B, made of coiled wire, in combination with the member 0 D, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
THOMAS W. BROWN.
