Description

' Y R. I; PATTERSON.
FASTBNING FOR JARS. ,I l No. 515,010. Patented Feb. 20,'1'894.
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT I. PATTERSON, OF MUNOIE, INDIANA.
FASTENING FOR JARS.
,SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 515,010, dated February 20, 1894.
Application filed May 19, 1893. Serial No. 474,754. (No model.) i
To alliwho'm/ it may concer-n;
Be it known that I, ROBERT I. PATTERSON, acitizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, 1n the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for Jars and the Like; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the and useful improvements in fastenings espe- `cially designed for use in connection with jars, bottles, and similar receptacles, and has for its object to provide a fastening of simple and cheap construction which in practice is susceptible of being quickly applied to close the mouth of the receptacle with a minimum of time and labor, and of being as quickly disconnected to open said mouth; and which by reason of its construction is durable, and not liable to get out of order.
My invention consists essentially in afastener formed of a single piece of wire, and in the detailsof construction and operation, all of which will fully and clearly appear .from a reading of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings which form a partof this specification, and in which- Figure `l represents in perspective view a jar with my improved fastener applied there- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 isa rear elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a top View showing the fastening partially removed. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the fastening detached; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modification.
Like letters of reference denote like parts v Ain the several gures of the drawings.
The reference letter a denotes a jar of ordinary construction to which my :invention is applicable, although, as will be understood, the fastening may be advantageously employed in connection with bottles and other receptacles. -The neck'of the jar is provided with an annular iangeb on which'andaround said neck is placed a rubber or other suitable gasket c, and d is the cover having a depending annular flange adapted to t over said neck and to rest and be clamped on said gasket.
The fastening is represented by the letter e, and is constructed of a single piece of Wire preferably square in its cross section and having sufficient resilience to enablethe fastening when made and applied to hold itself against displacement and impart the necessary pressure on the cover. This fastening consists of the loop portion f in the form of, but slightly larger than a semi-circle, which partially'surrounds the neck of the jar or bottle below the fiange, and is made of a diameter a little less t-han the diameter of the said neck in order that the same may be spru ng and held in place. At the ends of theloop portion the wire is bent rearwardly at g on said loop for a short distance, in order to permit of a vertical resilience, and is again bent vertically to form arms h which extend upward a distance equivalent to the height of the cover above the loop and is here bent and terminate in lugs fwhich engage the top of the cover on opposite sides as shown. The loop portionf is offset or bent upward at j, at equal points from the ends thereof, and this offset portion in practice finds a lodgment under the flange a'nd against the neck ofthe bottle. The arms h are preferably located at diametrically opposite points with relation to the jar, and the rearward bend g is preferably parallel with the loop portion. By reason of these features I obtain a lever action of the fastener, it being evident that as theloop is forced down to lodge the offset under the ange, the lugs t' are thereby strongly pressed downward on the cover and the jar is securely locked and sealed.
In operation, the lugs are placed upon the upper surt'ace ot' the cover, and by gentle IOO to compensate for any irregularities that may exist in the thicknessof the gasket or cover, and consequently all liability of breakage is overcome.
In Fig. 6 I have shown a fastener embodying all the essential features of my invention but in which the wire at the ends ot' the loop are bent downwardly and rearwardly at 7c and then upwardly to points diametrically opposite to each other and to the center of the cover. The operation of this modified form of construction is however substantially the same as that of the construction of fastener heretofore described, the only difference being that the bends form almost a true circle or spiral spring, Whereas in the first case the spring is ot' the torsional type.
The fastener when constructed in accordance With the foregoing is very simple in operation and being formed of a single piece of wire may be cheaply produced. It may be quickly applied and disconnected, and is not liable to become broken or to be disarranged.
Having now described and ascertained the nature of my invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A fastening for jars and the like formed of a single piece of Wire, and comprising a loop adapted to be sprung about the neck of the jar or other article, and having its ends formed with return bends, upwardly extending arms and lugs for engaging the cover, and an offset in the loop operat-ingin the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. A fastener for jars and the like made of a single piece of wire bent to form a loop adapted to be sprung about the neck of the jar or other article, and having its ends bent rearwardly, and then upwardly to form arms having lugs for engaging the cover, and an oliset in said loop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I aiiix mysignaturein presence of two Witnesses.
ROBERT I. PATTERSON.
