STRAP EAR FOR WELL BUOKETS. No. 348,046. Patented Aug. 24, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. PARRISH, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
STRAP-EAR FOR WELL-BUCKETS.
'JPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No; 348,046, dated August 24-. 1886.
Application filed June 11, 1886. Serial No. 204,886. .(No model.) T
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. PARRISH, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strap-Ears for Well- Buckets, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention is embodied in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective View, part being broken away, of a well-bucket provided with my improvement.
Referring to the several parts by letter, A represents my improved well-bucket, which 'is made of straight oak staves tongued and grooved together. The bucket has straight sides, but is smaller at the top than the bottom, to enable the hoops to be more easily kept on. These hoops B are of the usual construction.
O 0 indicate the strap-ears, each of which is formed of a single metal bar formed at its upper end with the eye 0, for the end of the bail or handle E, the lower end of the metal strap 0 being bent inwardly and upwardly into hook shape to fit under the lower end of one of. the staves, while the main or central portion of each strap is stamped or bulged out, as shown at C", at three (more or less) places, according to the number of hoops on the bucket or other article to which it is applied, these raised portions of the strap-ears fitting over and partially around the hoops B, which extend beneath the said straps, so as to effectually prevent the hoop from slipping in any way and from coming off the bucket. The strap-ears are heldin position against the side of the bucket by the staples F, the ends of which are clinched on the inner side of the stave, through which they are driven. As the lower ends of the strap-ears extend beneath the staves, it will be seen that the weight of the bucket and its contents falls not upon the staples or the hoops, but upon the lower ends of the metal straps themselves,
which extend beneath the lower ends of the staves of the buckets beneath the bottom A of the same, so that all strain is taken off of the staples and hoops, while the strap-ears hold the hoops firmly in position and effectually prevent them from slipping or working off in any way.
It is obvious that my improved strap-ear may be applied to a well-bucket or other bucket or article of any shape, and will always preventthe hoops of the bucket or article to which it is applied from coming off, while the peculiar shape of its lower end will always prevent it from being pulled off of the bucket or article to which it is applied.
\ Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The herein-described strapear, composed of a metal strap formed at its upper end with an eye having the curved lower end, and having its body portion offset or bent in places to fit over the hoops ofa bucket or other analogous article. I
2. The combination, with a bucket or other analogous article having encircling-hoops, of thehereiu-described strap-ears, composed each of a single metal strap formed at its upper end with an eye having the hook-shaped lower end, and having its body portion bent in places to fit over the said hoops, the staples, and a suitable bail or handle, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a well bucket made of straight tongueand grooved oak staves, and smaller at its top than at its bottom, of the hoops, the strap-ears composed each of a single metal strap formed at its upper end with an eye, having the curved or hook-shaped lower end, and having its body portion offset or bent in places to fit over the hoops, the staples, and the bail or handle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM H. PARRISH.
