Description

I. Mv WHITELAW.
' UOMBINED PACKAGE AND MEASURE. No. 245,593. Patented Aug. 9,1881..
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS M.WHITEL'AVV, OF HARTWELL, OHIO.
COMBINED PACKAGE AND MEASURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 245,593, dated August 9, 1881.
' Application filed June 20, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS M. W HITELAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at H artwell, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Package and Measure, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a metallic packingcase which is also adapted to be used as a meas- HIG.
The object of my invention is, first, to pro vide a strong packing-case with one fixed and one movable head, so constructed that the wooden head can be readily and quickly attached to the wooden rim surrounding the packing-case, which case will serve as a measuring-vessel after the wooden head is removed, so that instead ofthe packing-case being valueless after it has arrived at its point of destination and the contents removed it is adapted to be used-as a dry-measure, being an article of commerce that can be resold as such without loss to the shipper and at profit to the purchaser. By this method of making the packing-case a more strong and durable article can be cheaply employed by the shipper than by the use of boxes or other things which have little or no value for other purposes.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved packing-case. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
A represents a sheet-metal cylinder.
o represents a concave head or groove, which is formed with an ordinary tool while the metal is in the sheet form. The under side of this groove forms a ledge or offset on the inside of the cylinder and assists in holding the fixed head in position.
B represents an ordinary head.
1) represents a flange which is formed of the metal composing the cylinder A by spinning or turning the same down firmly against the head B, thereby securing it in a fixed position.
0 represents a wooden hoop or rim surl ounding the exterior of the vessel A.
0 represents a convex or outwardly-projecting bead or groove formed in the sheet metal A. The wooden hoop 0 seats upon the top ledge of the head 0, and prevents its slipping down upon the packing-case.
0 represents an outwardly-turned flange, which is spun or pressed outwardly and down or wood-screws being driven through the cover 7 into the rim O. The other form is shown in the drawings, and it consists of three or more metallic hooks, E, which are formed in the following manner: Straps ofsheet metalare firmly riveted upon the outer periphery of wooden hoop or rim G; then the cover D is placed in position, and the metallic straps E are then bent over and pressed down upon it, and, when they are punched, nails driven through the holes into cover D.
Instead of nails and holes, a teat may be formed by a set or punch indenting the metal of the strap E into the wooden head D, sufficient to prevent the head D from turning, or the extreme end or point of the hook E may be bent at right angles to the hook portion, so as to be driven vertically into the cover D and clinched into it.
F represents a head. It is shown in the center, between the bottom and top. When the package is made, say, to hold a half-bushel, the bead F would indicate a peck. Any number of beads indicating divisions of measures can be formed in the metal.
I claim A packiugcase composed of a sheet-metal cylinder having a fixed head secured in one end and a wooden rim or hoop secured upon the outside of the cylinder at the opposite end, the said head being secured in position by means of the groove a, flange I), and the said rim by an outwardlyturned flange, c, and head 0, all substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS M. WHITELAW.
Witnesses J. H. CHAS. SMITH, EUGENE L. FIRNKoEss.
