' UNITED STATES PATENT IEEIcE.
VILLIAM H. HUNT, OF BETHESDA, OHIO.
DEVICE FOR FASTENING HOOPS TOGETHER WITHOUT RIVETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,766, dated October l, 1901.
Application filed April 9, 1901.
lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description ing my invention applied thereto.
of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the in vention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a side elevation of a barrel hav- Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View of my device as applied to a locking-plate having a single slot d. Fig. et is a similar view showing a plate having two slots d'. Fig. 5 illustrates the strap in detail and on a larger scale.
The invention has relation to devices for hoopingbarrels, tanks, and like articles; and it consists in the novel construction and co1nbination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to provide means for fastening up barrels and other vessels formed of staves without using riveted hoops.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates a portion of a barrel, and B a hoop passing around it.
O represents alocking-plate having the curvature of the barrel and provided with a slot or slots, (indicated at CZ.) These slots are formed with their bearing edges e rounded. The slots are a little longer than the width of the hoop-strap F.
The hoopstrap F is made long enough to go around the barrel, with sufcient at the ends to be passed through the slots of the locking-plate and reversely bentmthat is to say, each end of the hoop after being passed through its slot in the locking-plate from the outside inward is bent back upon itself.
Serial No. 55,014. (No model.)
The strap is a frictional strap made of metal and is provided with frictional projections g, formed by stamping indentationson the reverse side. lVhen the ends are turned una der, these projections are on the inside of the ends, and when the hoop-strap is driven on the barrel the ends engage the Wood of the barrel and being clamped between the barrel and the lock-plate a secure fastening is formed capable of withstanding any pressure not suflicient to break the strap. The bearing edges of the slots of the locking-plate are rounded, as hereinbefore mentioned, in order to prevent the strap from being broken at the bend.
' By means of this device any vessel of staves may be hooped in a secure manner whether it be a barrel or a tub or a water-tank.
The depressions upon the reverse side of the strap and coincident with the round frictional bosses when the strap is tightly drawn around the barrel receive the wood thereof, v
said bosses upon the reverse side of the strap,
the ends of said strap being doubled and engaging the slot of said plate, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signatur in presence of two Witnesses.
