No."325,809.. 7 Patent-ed Sept. 1885. j
WITNESSES: f nwnnfo m ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES HYMAN eAnnpon JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
HOOP FOR BARRELSV,TUBS, 80C.
PECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 325,809, dated September 8, 1885.
Application filed June 3, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. BARD, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoops for Barrels, Tubs, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be herein after fully described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side view of a barrel or cask in part with my invention applied; Fig.2,a perspective view of the hoop detached,
and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a spacingsleeve used in connection with the hoop.
A indicates the barrel or cask in part, and B one of my improved hoops for securing the same. Said hoop B, which may be made of galvanized or other wire, and of which there may be any number on the barrel or other article of wooden-ware, and which may be made of different sizes and thicknesses of wire according to the size, &c., of the vessel to be hooped, is locked at itsmeetingend portions by forming the same with a bend, as at b, and coils c at the extremities of the wire uponeach side of the bend. Thisconstruction provides for a tight and secure lock of the hoop, and sothat the hoop may be driven onto the vessel with all the force that can ordinarily be exerted and still the splice remain intact. As, however, it is desirable that the hoop should be made adjustable, the splice formed, as described, is so mapped on each side of the lap between the two coils, 0, as to leave a space, 8, between its Wrapping portions, which will leave the coiled ends free to slide to or from each other, thus making the (No model.)
different construction may be used) a spacingsleeve, 0, which may be formed of a wedgeshaped or tapering piece ofsheet metal, is in serted at its narrowest end through the space 8, between the coils c the proper distance, and bent or wrapped around the terminal portion of the Wire, as shown in Fig. 1, thus forming a sleeve that prevents the wraps from approaching beyond their proper limit, thereby holding the locked hoop at its adjustment.
In order to apply my hoop to a barrel or other vessel, a hoop of the proper size is selected and placed around the staves, and. a sleeve, 0, driven into the space s'to cause the hoop to be drawn tightly to its place. In some instances the hoop will fit the barrel sufficiently close to render the use of the sleeve 0 unnecessary, in which case the inner ends of the two coils will contact when the hoop is driven upon the barrel, but the hoop will not stretch at the joint, owing to the construction thereof.
Having thus described my inventio11,I claim as new and dcsi re to secure by Letters Patent 1. Ina hoop for barrels, tubs, 8m, made of wire the construction of the extremities oft-he wire with a lock, substantially as described, the same consisting of a bend of each wire and a coil of the extremities of the wire loosely fitting upon each side of the bend, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the hoop between the two coils, of a spacing-sleeve, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
JAMES HYMAN BARD.
