IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSS-HOOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,675, dated April 22, 1879; application filed March 6, .1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WHITEHOUSE MALTBY, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Truss-Hoops, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan view of one of my improved truss-hoops. Fig. 2is a detail'cross-section of the same, taken through the line a: 00, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre' sponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish truss-hoops for coopers. use and other uses, which shall be so constructed that they cannot break or sliver, that the laps cannot draw apart, and that they will relieve the backs from all strain, so that they will last muchlonger than when made in the usual way, while being no more expensive in manufacture.
The invention consists in an improved truss hoop, having a metal strap fitted to the outer side of the wooden body, and extending from the end of the inner lap to or a little beyond the end of the-outer lap, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the wooden part or body of the hoop, the end of the inner lap, a, of which abuts against a shoulder formed upon the inner surface of the body A, and the outerdap, a is tapered to an edge.
B is a strap, made of iron, brass, or other suitable metal, and which is fitted to the rounded outer surface of the wooden hoop A. The metal strap B extends from the end of the inner lap, at, to or a little beyond the end of the outer lap, a
The hoopis held together and strengthened by rivets (l, which pass through the wooden hoop A and the metal strap B. The rivets G, that pass through the laps a, a have washers D placed upon their inner ends, the ends of which are bent down over the sides of the said laps, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The rivets G and the washers D are the same as used in the ordinary truss-hoops, except that in the improved hoop the Washers are placed upon the inner ends of the rivets, and
in the ordinary hoops they are placed upon the outer ends of the said rivets.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire-to secure by Letters Patent- An improved truss hoophaving a metal strap, B, fitted to the outer side of the wooden body A, and extending from the end of the inner lap, ct, to or a littlebeyond the end of the outer lap, a substantially as herein shown and described.
JOHN WHITEHOUSE MALTBY.
