WIRE BARREL-HOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 405,029, dated June 11, 1889.
Application filed November 30, 1888. Serial No. 292,183. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD CHASE GOR- DON, of Ohetopa, in the county of Labette and State of Kansas, have invented a new and Improved Barrel Wire Hoop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to secure a barrel-hoop which may be readily made by the cooper or other user at a smaller cost than ordinary band-hoops can be procured, and which shall be light and graceful in appearance and capable of use ordinarily after the barrel to which it has been Originally applied has been worn ou I accomplish this object by constructing in a manner hereinafter described a hoop of Wire, preferably galvanized steel wire, locked at the ends, and the strands of which are secured at intervals by bands, preferably of hoop-iron.
Reference isv to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my hoop in its completed condition ready for use. Fig. 2 represents the bend made in the leading end of the wire when about to begin forming the hoop, and Fig. 3 represents the manner of locking the ends of the wire to-. gether to complete the hoop.
I will describe the manner in which m y hoop is formed, and the construction of the hoop when completed will thus be made apparent.
The Wire to be used in forming the hoop may be stored upon an ordinary reel. A former of the size of the hoop to be made is also provided with a pin or peg projecting from its surface. The leading end a of the supply of wire is unwound from the reel and bent into a loop I), so as to leave the portion 0 of the strand of sufficient length to be bent around the completed hoop, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The loop 19 is then placed on the pin of the former, and the formeris rotated a sufficient number of times to wind upon itself the number of strands desired for the hoop.
The wire is then cut off from the main supply, and the cutoif strand is bent toward the loop I), as shown at d, Fig. 1, and inserted through the loop I), and bent Over upon itself, as shown at c, Fig. 1, in which position it is securely held bya band f. The end 0 is then bent around the strands of the hoop, and thereby a secure lock is formed.
At intervals throughout the body of the hoop, bands g g are applied to retain the strands in place.
Some of the merits of my hoop are that owing to the greater tensile strength of wire over band-iron, which, when used for hoop, is further weakened by rivet-holes, less weight of metal is required and a saving in cost is thereby effected. The hoops accommodate themselves to the. slope and inequalities of the barrel, whereby the strain will be equalized. They present a handsome appearance upon a barrel, and when made of galvanized wire willnot rust. The hoop may also be used ordinarily after the barrel is worn out, and may be made by any person.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A barrel-hoop composed of a length of wire wound to form a number of strands, the ends of the length of wire being locked, substantially as specified, and the body of the hoop being held in place at intervals by bands, substantially as described.
2. A barrel-hoop composed of a length of wire wound to form a number of strands, formed upon its leading end a with a loop I) and portion 0, and its other end bent through the loop I), the bent portion 6 being secured in place bya band f, and other bands g at intervals throughout the body of the hoop, substantially as specified.
