Description

v W. I. WINNE. Basket-Cover Fastening No. 221,203. Patented-Nov. 4,1879.
Inventor N\\.\.\AM \.N\NE. win-W MW N4 PETERS, PHOT HER, WASHINGTON u c wire a return bend or bightat I).
U NITED STATES IVILLIAM 1. I/VINNE, OF ALBANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT PATENT QFFIGE.
TO CHARLES L. LOGKE, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN BASKET-COVER FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent- No. 221,203, dated November 4, 1879; application filed September 6, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM I. WINNE, of the city and county of Albany, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Fastening Covers to Baskets, 850., of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompan yin g drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my device; Fig. 2, the same, showing the manner of applying it to a basket before the cover-is secured; and Fig. 3, the same, showing the manner of securin g the cover.
This invention relates to devices for fastening the covers-of baskets; and it consists in the combination, with abox and its cover, of a metallic bar bent to form at one end a close hook, bent again rectangularly near the middle, bent again near the other end at an acute angle, and provided with a sharp point for entering the top of the cover.
As shown in the drawings, A is the fastening device, which I preferably make of Bessemer-steel wire, cut at'a sharp angle at each end.
A hook, B, for attaching the device to the basket, is formed at one end by giving the At the opposite end the wire receives another bend, at c, for forming the point C for driving into the basket-cover. This point extends from the same side that the hook B does, and itis made by bending the wire to form an angle of about eighty degrees with the body of the device, which angle I find in practice to be the one best suited for the purpose of drawing the device snugly to its place.
In applying the device the hook B is.first inserted beneath the hoop or band D of the basket, as shown in Fig. 2. The body of the device is then bent, as at a, Fig. 3, overthe upper edge of the wooden cover E of the basket,
and the point 0 driven into said cover, as shown in Fig. 3. 7 To detach the device the point C is first pried out of the cover E, and the bend at a straightened out until the hook B freely slips from its place beneath the hoop D of theba-sket. After being removed the device may be repeatedly used upon the same basket or on different ones, as may be' required.
This device may also be used for thepurpose of securing the covers of paper bandboxes and other similar articles. When used for that purpose the hook B is inserted in the top of the cover, the body of the device extending down the side of the box, into which the point 0 is inserted, and is retained in place by the hold produced by its angle.
IVhen the fastening-Wire is applied the loop or hook B is inserted beneath the hoop or band D of the basket, its angle a fits on the corner edge of the same, and the oblique tip, terminating in the point 0, is firmly embedded in the top of said cover. Any effort to forcibly sep arate the cover will be resisted by the wedge action of the said cover and tip, due to the inclined or oblique shape of the latter from the acute bend c to the point 0. Y
I do not broadly claim a metallic bar or rod bent into shape for holding a basket-cover on a basket, being aware that such is not broadly new; but
What I do claim is In combination with a box and its cover E, a metallic bar, A, bent at b to format one end the close hook B, bent again rectangularly near the middle at a, and having near the other end a bend, c, forming-an acute angle, and having a sharp point, 0, forced through the cover to complete a firm fastening.
WILLIAM I. WINNE. Witnesses:
WILLIAM H. Low, 'J. AUsrIN VAN PATTEN.
