J'EIERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON n C UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES W. SHEPARD, OF NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
lM PROVEMENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.'21s.7s4, dated August 19, 1879, application filed June 21, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SHEPARD, of Newton, Middlesex county, Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and Improved Bale-Tie. of which the following is a specification, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, Fig. 2 is a plan, and Fig. 3 is an edge view, of a bale-tie embodying my improvements.
It is my object to obtain a simple, cheap, and strong bale-tie, to which the band can be applied readily, quickly, and without twisting or lateral bending, and which will not be so liable to become detached from the band, whether on or off the bale, as others hereto fore in use.
The tie consists of an iron or steel plate of proper dimensions, which, at one end or side, is thickened or re-enforced in the usual way, as shown at a. It is also slotted horizontally at i b, to form the upper and lower bars, 0 d, for receiving the upper and lower band-loops. The lower bar, d, is separated at one end from the body of the tie by a vertical slot, 6, which extends from the lower edge of the plate up into the oblong central slot, b. The said bar, at its free end and on its upper edge, is formed or provided with a projection, f, and is bent outward or to the front, as indicated plainly in Figs. 1 and 3, so that thelower band-loop can be set in place over the end oi'the bar by a lateral movement witho nt requiring to be twisted or laterally bent.
The projection f forms a stop, which prevents the loop from working off from the bar when once in place on the bale. The vertical part 9 of the plate beyond the slots 1) and 0 forms a leg, which prevents the escape of the band and greatly reduces the liability of the tie becoming detached and separated from the band, whether the latter be on or off fromthe bale.
remark, in conclusion, that do not claim any of the features of construction of the tie, separately considered but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The hereinbefore-described bale-tie, consisting of a steel or iron plate horizontally slotted to form upper and lower band-receiving bars, the lower bar being separated at one end from the body of the plate by a vertical slot, and outwardly bent, and provided with a terminal projection or stop, as and for the pur poses shown and specified.
In testimony whereof I' have hereunto set my hand this 20th June, 1879, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES W. SHEPARD.
