BALE-TIE FASTENING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,636, dated July 3, 1883,

To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN S. LENOX, of the cityand county of \Vorcester, and Common wealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Tie Fastenings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a side view of my fastening device attached to one end of a wire bale-tie, the other end of the tie also being shown ready to be engaged with the fastening device. Fig. 2 represents the parts shown in Fig. 1, the free end of the tie being engaged with the fastening device. The dotted lines show the manner of attaching the free end, as will be hereinafter fully described; and Fig. 3 represents a modification of my improved fastening device, as will be hereinafter fully described.
To enable those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it more in detail.
My invention relates to that class of baleties made of wire, and having a fastening device permanently attached to one end of the tie, the other end of the tie being provided with a loop to engage with the fastening device; and it consists in making the said fastening device of apeculiar form, and engaging it with the looped end of the tie in the manner to be hereinafter fully described.
In the drawings, the part marked A represents my improved fastening device. It may be stamped or pressed out of any flat metallic materialinthe form shown in Fig. lofthe drawings, having the eye or hole a for the insertion of one end of the wire bale-tie, and the oblique slots 1) and c in the opposite edges of the fastening device A, made so as to form the hooks B and O, and the end of the fastening device being prolonged to form abrace, D, for thepurposes hereinafter described.
The part marked A, Fig. 3, represents a modification of my fastening device as shown in Fig. 1, there-being only one slot, 1), in one edge of the fastening device, forming one hook, B; but the mode of attachment of the device A to the looped end of the bale-tie is the same as the mode of attachment of the device A, as will be hereinafter described. I
The part marked E represents one end of a wire bale-tie, the end being inserted through the eye a in fastening A, and bent back and intertwisted with the body of the tie, as clearly shown in the drawings. This is done before the bale-tie is applied to the bale.
The part marked F represents the other end of the tie, the end being turned back and intertwisted with the body of the tie, so as to form the loop G in the usual manner before the tie is applied to the bale. If desired, the end F may be first inserted in the slot 1) or c, and then bent back and intertwisted with the body of the tie after the tie has been applied to the bale.
1 The operation of my improved bale-tie-fastening-device, and the manner of engaging the same with the looped end of the tie, is as follows: The tie is passed around the bale, and when the same has been sufficiently compressed in the press the part D is passed into and through the loop G, in the manner shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2, until the end of the loop passes by the end of hook B and drops into slot I). The end F of the tie is then straightened out, so that when the bale expands, being removed from the press, it will take the position shown by full lines, Fig. 2, the brace or part D bearing and resting upon the inner end of the loop G. If, for convenienoe, it is desired to engage the loop G- with the hook O on the other side of the fastening device A, the part D is passed through from the opposite side of the loop G from that shown in Fig. 2, so that the end of the loop will pass by the end of hook G and drop into slot 0, the brace or part, D resting upon the opposite side of the inner end of loop G from that shown in Fig. 2.
I have made my fastening device so that the bearings of the two ends of the bale-tie will be in the same line with the line of tension of the tie, as is clearly seen from the drawings in Fig. 2. I also pass the main part or body of my fastening device through the looped end of the tie to engage the same in the manner heretofore described. From this construction and manner of engagement my fastening device possesses great strength, and will not break I when under great pressure, although made of thin metal and light in weight.
It will be readily seen by those skilled in the art to which my invention belongs that by 1 passing the part 1) through the loop G, the end of the loop passing into the slots 1) or c and hooking over the hooks B or (I, my fastening device and its manner of engaging with the looped end of the tie possesses many advantages over those heretofore used. First, the bearings of the end of the tie being in the same line as the line of tension of the tie, as before stated, and the partorbrace D passing through the loop G and bearing upon the inner end of said loop G,anylateral. movement of the ends of the tie, when under pressure, is prevented; second, when the ends of the tie havebeen once connected they will not readily become disconnected when for any reason the bale is so compressed that, the tie being contracted, the ends are forced together or passed by each other, for the reason that by the mode of engaging the ends of the tie the part 1') will pass tarther into the loop (l, the end of said loop passing along the curved part (I or d of the fastening device A, and when the bale is again expanded, the ends of the tie being drawn apart, the end of loop G will slip into the slots 1) or e and be firmly held in. place by hooks B or C, as in the first instance.

1. A bale-tie fastening comprising a flat metal strip with tapering edges, having one or more slots for the looped end of the binding-wire, the opposite end of said wire being secured to the broad end of the lastening-piece, the narrow end thereof acting as a brace, substantially as described.
2. A bale-tie fastening, A, pivoted at one end, and provided with the hook or hooks on one edge thereof, and the brace l), substantially as shown and described.
